Was just in the news that Ford is going to re-engineer the current i6 to meet euro standards and keep the geelong engine plant open.

woohoo!!!

Quote:
The plant will undergo a $21 million restructure to enable the development and construction of the I6 engine to meet the strict new Euro IV emissions standards, which will be introduced in Australia in 2010.

Quote:
"This is also good news for parts makers. The inline-6 is a unique Australian engine that uses components from suppliers in Geelong and across the country.

"All three Australian-based motor vehicle producers will now be making engines to meet the new Euro IV standards when they are introduced into Australia in 2010."

Thanks.. was just on the late news...

Funny, today I was explaining to my wife how it was a tragedy that the i6 was going away as it was part of history and how my first real car was a 64 XP falc with an i6.. couple of hours later I hear on thes that it wasn't happening..... I'm stoked even if I didn't hear it first. :-)

In other words, they will rescue American car workers by keeping American factories open and they will close down the unprofitable subsidiaries of which the Australian ones are a classic example.[quote]

s**t, australia is one of the only ford subs in the world that does turn a profit. it might only be a very small one but they do turn a profit. europe and south africa are the only other to iirc.

A while ago i read part of the reason for companies going to V6's was because they intrude into the passenger compartment less during big accidents. Obviously that isn't an issue anymore, or was never a falcon issue.

Two hallmark features of luxury cars are low NVH and good bottom end torque, both of which are hallmark features of the falcon.

dont forget at the time of the origional decision to import the duratec there was a lot of talks going on between ford US, the US gov, and the UAW (union of auto workers) about keeping sales of the US made v6 up to keep US jobs. the deal struck was that ford made all their global operations move to the yankee made engine.

Now that there is a new administration this isnt as rock solid. add to the fact that we have had the duratec over here for testing for 18 months?? now and FPV still cant develope enough power from it to match its current line up, that they cannot afford to use it.

good news for us ford fans, there was a bit of weeping when it was first anounced.

Its good to see a big faceless company like Ford Australia keeping jobs here.
Especially during a time when it's much needed :s
