hi , here is one for the ef falcons owners , just replaced the fuel pump , when car started , it makes a noise like a metal strip is hitting a metal fan , it only does this when cold start after it never does it , only when dead cold , now i know what it is , but wonder if others do ? ill tell you this much , its not the starter motor , and nothing in the drive line , this problem happens from time to time , and is not restricted to fords ,
do you know what it is ?

no sorry you are wrong , as a belt as you said squeals , this makes a metal sound , another clue is that this part should be replaced but rarely does as people forget untill they make noise , holdents do this alot . it is very comen on cars of age.

LOL no sorry wrong lifters will make a noise like an ill adjisted old style bridge rocker , and yes one of mine does need to be looked at but this is not the cause as i said ot is only there for a minute or if you really listen you can hear it when hot but only slightly ., i will tell you this it has no moving parts , and is very important for the car (well from factory anyway) besides i thought the 4.0 is a overhead unlike the old x series .
oh yes one more thing , when hot people complain that the car has annoying rattle on take off , almost like ball bearings in a can , (but not quite )
now i think by now you should know/guess what it is ,
and like i said it is one of the most commen part overlooked in most cars when serviced , and cars when made must have it on ,
you got to laugh at this when you know what it is ,

i would say that the honeycomb is loose inside , and when the fumes heat it it exspands and the noise stops , you can tell when they need to be replaced by starting the car and rev it , if you hear a slight rattle from it , you know its on the way , but i think by law there suppose to be replaced , but not sure of when , every year ??
does anyone know ?
