I take it that E series falcon 6s have 92 degrees thermostats as standard.

Any benefit from changing thermostat from 92 degrees to a 82 degrees or even a 72 degrees??

What are the beneifts or pitfalls in doing this??

Maybe a little more power (as everyone seems to claim) but generally it will use more fuel.

The engines are designed to run their most efficient at 92deg.

Does this mean the engine will run at that temperature or thats when the thermostat opens up.

Just because it opens up at that temperature, doesnt nessisarily mean the coolant will stay at that temperature? Wont it just rise to normal temperature as the cooling system performance wont increase will it?

I can safely say that i have put a 161-170 degF Thermostat in, and with a new radiator that i needed, as it was the problem i had cooling the car.
If i'm i'm on the highway, my car will sit on 160 degF or less. Around town it will rise to no more than 200 degF, or around 92-94 degC.
I've gotta get around to changing that fairly soon.
So i have noticed a great drop in temp, from the thermostat alone, but on the highway, it will not run any hotter than the lowest rating of the thermostat.

Nope. It will hover within a few degrees of the opening temperature of the termostat.

If its a 92deg thermostat, the temp will sit in the 93 to 95deg mark once its 100% stabilised.

Ive whacked in a 180 thermostat. On highway car sits just up into the normal section.

Sitting in traffic it sits on the A in "normal"

If I flog the car a little it pretty much goes up to m in "normal". Its never been above half way.

not always.

witha 92 degree thermostat, mine used to sit on 98-102 mark, and even made it to 108 sometimes, thats why i went a 77 deg thermostat.

now it sits on the L about 80-85 degs. on hot days with some hard driving might see back up to 95

Maybe I should have said in a correctly and well maintained fully working cooling system. ie Radiator not blocked in anyway, coolant it good, factory water pump and good working thermos.

I know Melbourne doesn't get as hot weather as Perth sometimes, but I've never seen my car rise over the 96deg engine temperature mark, even when towing my jetski or boat with the aircon on in 35/40 degree weather.
