I wonder how much of this "plague" comes down to piss poor maintenance on the owners behalf.

For instance, flushing the radiator and changing the coolant every year. Not letting it turn into straight water, expire then start corroding parts of the cooling system.

Too many people rely on the Ford service manual rather than using common sense.

I acknowledge that some had problems early on... But the later ones could be based on lack of servicing. No where does the ebay fatty say he's serviced the car adequately, nor whether he's changed the coolant at any time.

I do like how he / his mechanics claim every BA Falcon has had this problem. Ford made 200,000 BA Falcons, and it seems they all reside in Perth.

Maybe its something to do with Perth water, and not enough corrosion inhibitor for their water.

Entirely possible. I always thought their garden taps and similar used bore water.

There is a lot of bore water use in Perth mainly for garden use, but this is by choice. Where i grew up fresh town water came from the Canning and Helena reservoirs. Of course now they have their de-sal plant. I wonder how hard Perth water is.

Car is booked in next Friday for a tans cooler kit, installed by my local radiator shop! Top of the line brand, 290$ for just the kit. It's well worth it, peace of mind over the fact that stock lines in the radiator could burst any time soon. Before summer comes swell.

You won't be disappointed mate, I had one fitted to my EL the other month and was glad I had it put on. For me it feels like it firmed up the gears a bit and the box doesn't run nearly as hot as what it used to. However I had my one plumbed back into the radiator rather than bypass it so it has extra cooling effect. I did this because I also had the radiator replaced at the same time.

so perhaps the el couldnt be seperated??
im new to this subject, does that make sence?

No... The point of a trans cooler is to keep the trans fluid as close as possible to the 90 to 95 deg running temperature that BTR specify.

This isnt possible when, say, towing/constant high speed/taxi use/etc/etc and using just the radiator.

BA drivers use a trans cooler to survive potential trans cooling failures. Not what they are typically designed for.

For me it was to keep it at a cooler optimal temp, the BA had the issue of the radiator failing and leaking coolant into the trans causing a bit of mess in your transmission. With the picture below it shows two different set ups I went with the one on the left, but people with a BA for protection run it past the radiator and as long as the new trans cooler is large enough and you aren't putting the trans under huge load it will do the job just fine.

Iv already stated the kit I'm getting does NOT cool down using the hot water in the radiator. It's a non contamination kit. Let u guys know the brand next week.

Or am I wrong, perhaps it still runs through the radiator but the trans cooler will keep the temps down like in the picture above preventing failed lines, find out next week.

I think the issue is the radiator failinmg - then that causes coolant to leak into transmission fluid lines within the radiator?

My XR is on 162,000 km - I use the shifter regularly = more fun driving.

I think I might do this trans cooler bypass mod. I did it on my previous car (EF)

Can it be installed without taking the whole front bar off?

probably, but i'd imagine it would be allot easier with out the front bar on, and the front bar isen't to hard to pull off anyway.
