My rocker cover had a crack in it and ever since I've discovered this crack the engine has been running horrible.

I have now put an EL rocker cover on and same problem.

1. The car idles low and dounds rough like it did when I got the firing order wrong.

2. It idles low and rough.

3. When it's idling low for a while it cuts out.

4. When I went to start it again there was no crank, ignition was dead.

Sounds like something to do with the leads but it happened directly when the rocker cover snapped. I was moving it and it died in the middle of the road, and I had to chuck my hazards on.

check your map sensor, its on the firewwall behind the bbm, up high. should have a electroninc plug, and a small hose. if this hose falls off you get what youve got, sept it will bucket out smoke. could be faulty.

one thing to check

Hose is fine.

I now hear a rattling near the front of the engine.

It's kinda sounds like paper hitting a fan (trebly type rattling).

Something to do with the timing chain?

Maybe something fell inside the engine when the rocker cover broke. You did say that the rocker cover snaped at the front of near the first bolt in the other thread?
Hence the sound from the front.

Yeah I looked into the engine and saw nothing.

I havn't taken all the rocker arms and camshaft out, I've never done that before and looks like a big thing to do.

Yeah, I'll type it in steps.

1. Engine was running rough like when you get the HT leads mixed up, engine almost stalled, got out and saw the rocker cover had broke.

2. Bought EL rocker cover from wrecker, fitted it and it was running rough as before.

3. Attempted to move it out of the drive way and onto front lawn, engine just died was still running rough and heard a rattling noise.

4. Attempted to start it again but there was no crank, so put hazard lights on.

5. Tried starting it again 5 minutes later and it just started.

6. Moved it into garage as fast as I could.

7. Found a bit of the rocker cover gasket was not sealed (around 1 inch) so I refitted it and it now seems to run slightly better.

The rough sound seems to have reduced sincee I fixed the gasket but it's still there.

When I say rough sound, it has a low bassy sound coming from the engine like a lot of old 70's cars

It's still idling low and rattling and yes it cranks now.
