Hello everyone,

Sorry if this may piss you off but I have searched the site for answers but had no luck in finding what I need. I have a 1995 EF Fairmont 6 cyl.

Basically, my car was idling on the boat ramp yesterday and as I went to drive up off of it, my car went a few metres before stopping completely. Opened the bonnet to find the alternator/crankshaft/waterpump etc belt shredded to bits. Thing is, I would have though I would have been able to at least keep driving my car to the top of the ramp, but unfortunately it just stopped. It would turn over fine but just not start.
So we got towed and all the rest, went to Autobarn this morning, got a new belt, put it on and again, the car will turn over but wont start. I really need my car for work today and will be stuffed without it.

Is there something else I need to do to reset the computer or something - I don't know - because there's obviously a sensor which stops the car from starting when it hasn't got a belt....? Otherwise, I must have done more damage somewhere else.

Any help or information ASAP would be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU!

Check to see if the crank sensor is broken/wire stripped.
Its just above the harmonic balancer.

Then the next thing is to find out why the belt came off.
Check all pulleys for endplay/movement.
chances are the water pump might have caused this OR the belt was far due for a change.

I replaced the alternator on Friday under the guidance of a qualified and experienced auto electrician - took particular notice of how the belt came off so I knew how it would go back on - plus I followed the diagram sticker under the bonnet. All wires seem to be intact.

yeah about the only thing that it could be is the CAS or a buggered alt and battery or maybe the belt damaged some wiring

It has a brand new battery (bought last weekend), new alternator (bought Friday) and from what I can see, all wiring is still intact and doesn't seem damaged. I guess it's off to the mechanic in the morning. :x
