If your parkers and reverse lights come on, after seeing smoke, the wires may have fused together, I would be getting it seen to, before it causes more damage...

Had a similar thing happen to me years ago, when I pulled the dash apart, I found about 4 wires had melted and fused together... but check behind the fuse holder itself, for sometimes it could be coming from there..

Well it won't be a dead short - not far off though.
Inst Batt feeds the inst cluster and the trip computer - try unplugging each (trip comp first),and put your fuse back for a few secs each time.

What electrically related work have you done recently ??

Not real funny if it happened as you were driving along - smoke demisting isn't real effective.
Good idea to disconnect the battery -ve if the car is left unattended - when you get a chance, put a meter between the -ve lead and the -ve battery post and see if there's a large current draw.
IIRC the INST BATT fuse should be 10A - it isn't anything silly like 30A I hope ??
