Hey guys...

I drive an ef gli with about 272000 on the clock. Any way she's beggining to be an oil abuser and smoking it out the pipe. Particularly on high rpm puffing between gears But not all the time. And also when the car hasn't been started for a few days then started and given a few revs (upto about 4000) when cold. But nothing when warm..

Been told it could be valve stem seals or whatever. Anything else it could be?

Cheers.
Sam.

well i wouldn't imagine it would be the rings, the only thing i can suggest is do a compression test and maybee get a mate to stand behind the car while u give it a rev and see if he can smell any burning oil, unless u can smell it already lol.
just try the simple things first cos there is nothin worse than half pullin a motor appart then havin someone come up and say "yea i had the same problem, took me three minutes to fix" lol.

cheers,
tomo

Yeah got a few mates that are mech's. I'll give them a holla for a compression test. Reason why I think it's the seals is cos when it sits for a while I dare say that the oil is slowly seeping into a couple of (or could even be one??) cylinders, It causes smoke to puff out, but then there is near none or no blue smoke when you give a boot full when it's warm. But considering the hard life this cars had previous to my ownership where it's been used for towing and all sorts. So I was told... And being about 18 thou short of 300 000 kms. But by then I'll take the head off and give it a fresh start. With some added go fast bits  :D

You'll know if your valve stem seals are totally rooted when the car develops a miss after a mild flogging cause the spark plugs are drenched in oil.
