I have a bad oil leak at the front of my I6 VCT Fairlane. The VCT switch was replaced 10K ago but is again(still?) leaking. It appears that the oil MAY be comming out around the domed aluminuim section bolted to the front of the motor. Can any of the experts out there tell me if this gasket can be easily replaced by a simple unbolt rebolt operation, or is this somewhat trickier than that.

Thanks avrojavascript:emoticon(':(')

Was down at the local mechanics this morning to order some engine mounts and this is exactly what he was working on! Oil dripping all over the belt.

It appears that you have to take off the rocker cover first then the housing that holds the VCT module.

You should be able to see an O-ring between the top of the head and the VCT housing when the rocker cover's off and I think that's the sucker you want.

This is only what I observed whilst talking to him, so I could be wrong.
He had also replaced the switch on the side of the housing already. Seems they are a bit expensive!

Thanks for your response. Oil is getting all over the belt, but does not seen to be coming out of the switch which is quite expensive. Do you know if there is anything to watch for when taking off the VCT housing? I assume there is an hydraulic actuator of some sort under there.

I think you just unbolt it once the rocker cover is off.

On the one I saw the oil was coming out the inlet side of the motor between it and the housing.
