G'day people,
Sounds like a silly question but my Ford AUII is getting close to 400,000klm on the odometer reading. Since I want to hang onto this vehicle for some time yet. Is there anything I need to keep an eye on or be prepared for nearing the 400,000klm mark. I took the car to Ford for a service check ($150 later) The motor is idling not as smooth as before and was told sometime ago (about 2 years ago) it had a leak in the manifold, (I assume bolts needed re-tensioning) I never got around to do doing anything about it as yet. Any recommendations or suggestions would be welcome. Cheers, Bondy |

Thanks for your suggestion. With compression test, I assume disconnect ignition leads and remove spark plug on the cylinder being tested? What should the compression reading be on the cylinders. I have looked in the book I have but could not see it as yet. Cheers |

My EL has done 450K kms. original engine, original gearbox, original diff.How to get it that far? Regular servicing: Change g'box oil /filter every year, change engine oil/filter 3 months, change diff oil every year, brake fluid every 2 years, keep cooling system maintained. Get a GOOD radiator, e.g.: SSS, run a g'box oil cooler. My trucks used to do over a million kms with no major problems due to regular GOOD servicing

Thanks mate, regular maintenance I tend to do but forgot to take note of the date, month and year when I changed the transmission box. About a year ago or so, might be time for transmission oil change, with those sealed gearboxes I'll have to put the mongrel on a hoist just to check to see if the oil is black, no dipstick on these AUII's Will get another transmission service kit and replace filter. Diff oil will be done next month, brake fluid has been done last week. Cooling system has not been redone since I got the vehicle about 4 or 5 years ago. Has a new radiator (about 3 year old) and new aftermarket thermo-electric twin fans, replaced the old tired and noisy ones. |

Sort your manifold leak out ASAP.
It can cause some cylinders to run lean, that will eat metal out of them very not good. You probably need to replace the gasket, you can do that without taking the manifold off, just unbolt it, the support bracket will hold it all roughly in place. Then pull on it and you will get a few mm clearance, slip the old one out and the new one in. Probably about 2 hours? |

It was some time ago I had the car go in for a diagnostic check. That was about 2 years ago when a leaky manifold was detected. It was done through Ford, never got around to it since. Where does one get the manifold gasket from? Trying to avoid Ford due to cost. Thanks for the tip on manifold workaround. Cheers |

I imagine you should just be able to get a gasket from repco?
If they don't have it in stock, they most certainly will be able to order it in.

yeah even supercheap has them I believe, was like $20 or something like that.
Mine made the idle funny as well, and it ate the 100,000km spark plug on the first 3 cylinders in a few weeks |

oh, look at getting a replacement radiator overflow bottle.
They always die. You can get Aluminium ones off ebay for like $180 or plastic ones from ford for $180. (I got the one from ford because I'm an idiot, it will break again) Just be aware if you have one with or without the switch. |

I've replaced the radiator header / cooling tank about 2 years ago, still good as gold. Spark plugs were changed last year as well as ignition coil last year, small bolts on the ignition coil, 6mm, bit of a snug fit for a coil. I'll have a price check with Supercheap, Repco and Bursons , I'm sure there will be bit of price difference, all 3 are within a few klms where I live. Cheers |

Before you do that find the leak and make sure its there, you could have vacuum leaks coming from lots of places.
With the engine running if its a bad leak you can probably hear it sucking, have a feel around you might get lucky and find it with your fingers. Failing that get a can of start ya bastard and with the engine idling spray short spurts around the intake manifold (basically anything after the throttle body is a suspect) if you find the leak the engine should rev. There are a bunch of hoses going into the manifold for things like brakes and also to run the heater stuff in the cabin you can get leaks from any of them too. Oh check your idle air control valve, it bolts on on top of the throttle body. Mine (at 200,000km) was so full of crap it couldn't move, cleaning that out sorted out a rough idle I was having for a while. That black shaft inside it? Its meant to be shiny steel lol. You may need to do an idle re-learn procedure after this too. You can either disconnect the battery for a while or there is one fuse you can pull which does the same job, somewhere on here somebody mentions it. |
