I've had a metallic vibrating/buzzing noise under my car that occurs at approximately 3000rpm, which really spoils the fun on fanging the car.

I thought it would just be the heat shield on the cat, but I took that off yesterday and the noise is still there.

What the hell else could it be?

Cheers,
Dave.

you've checked the cat, but what about the rest of the exhaust hitting the body?

OK, I'll check the rest of the exhaust.

It's relative to engine revs, not speed and will do it with the car stationary and revving.

Bit of an update, just went out and checked the exhaust - that seemed fine.
So I popped the hood, and gave it a few revs from the engine bay.

It actually sounds like it's coming from the motor.
To make sure it wasn't any of the ancillaries, I removed the belt and tried again. Still there.

So something on the motor is buzzing a terrible sound :(
Frank said balancer, but I don't see how it could be that? It doesn't have any play.

Oh, could it be timing chain?
What do timing chain rattles sound like?

Do you have a clutch fan on ur engine? If so turn ur engine on, grab a thick cloth and slowly stop the fan then hold it. See if there is a vibration in ur harmonic balancer.

Hello no, that was one of the first things I removed lol.

Quick question, is my signature visible, because one of the main reasons it's there is so to help with questions/answers.

The noise kinda seems like it's coming from the front of the engine somewhere, develops at about 3000rpm and dissapears by 3500rpm.

I'm not ruling out the balancer though, but how do I check it?

is the niose like a clacking? could be flywheel?

i had a flywheel ring gear seperate on me once, but auto flywheels are much weaker than manual flywheels.

big end knock? does the motor rattle when you turn it off?

Nah it's a real buzzing noise, really irritating.
Really sounds like two bits of metal vibrating together, almost like a subwoofers effects on bootlids.

I would hope it's not bottom end lol, motor only has about 40,000km on it.

Here I made a vid of it, you can hear it come as the revs rise, then dissapear as they rise even more.
