take out things like spare tyre, some interior bits and wiring, a/c compressor/condenser, run it low on fuel, take the washer bottle out, remove un-necessary padding behind panels, etc.
there is plenty of stuff you can do to make the car lighter.

Blah!

Few ideas from my opinion.

easy yet different/interesting mods. Try to get some spare wheels in trade for your wheels on the car, give them a light sand and spray them silver so they look like chaser/pursuit rims.

tint your car, tinting can cost bout $200-250 for a wagon depending on who does it. alternatively you can get yourself some second hand wheels from some local tyre/wheel place for about $350-400. get the car a good buff up and make sure all the bits that a loose, squeaky or falling off tightened up and cleaned up. you have to be least happy with it to want to look after it!.

interior a bit dirty, get out some jiffy spray n wipe and give it a good wipe all over then throw some armor all (or not if u dont want but spray n wipe is a good cleaner!)

wanna be lame, make up some headlight eyebrow/eyelids over the headlight/indicators shrinking them down a bit.. maybe get some vinyl for the side of the car, you can find plenty on ebay.com from the states for about under $100 AU sent to australia with some pretty wild designs.

otherwise id say check out volvo forums or cardomain and have a look through other peoples rides to give u some ideas.

still, what the hell are u askin about a volvo here? lol sell it and get a eb/ed?

if you are going to use it as a scrub hack i wouldent spend any money on it coz they usualy dont last long. but then again whats a bushbasher without a paint job (spray can) and mayby welded diff for better sliding round corners. do some weight reduction back doors, seats and maybe the roof and exhaust.

Ive owend 4 bushbashers in the past 7 years

#1 72' Mitsubishi Galant $230
#2 XB Falcon $50
#3 70' toyota carona $300
#4 XE falcon $ 250

I got some awsome footage on DVD of the XE in its final hours before it Died.

$1000 is a bit too much for something that is going to recieve severe punishment.
pitty you dont live closer to central qld there is a vl commodore across the road from me waiting for someone to take it away was used for a bush basher but its got a fuel problem coz it only runs on aerostart. but it did go f**k Hard probly only needs a few parts and it will again.

Obviously you'll want extra grunt so you'll need to attach a couple of extra spoilers somewhere on the wagon. Also install some of those skull & crossbone window jet washers so that it'll become a fully sick paddock bomb. Maybe add a Herbie the Love Bug paint job and paint the number sixty nine on the doors...
