on the au's i've noticed it at the back of the head. not sure on the el. always wondered what the difference is & what the reason for moving it was, considering this is where most of the corrosion takes place at the rear.
there should be both a temp guage sender and a temp sensor unless the guage reads from the ecu.

Back of an AU is a head temp sensor (they use that for the run safe feature if you manage to dump all your coolant). The sensor on the thermostat, is for the coolant/water temp.

So for people who are wanting to hook up an electrical water temp gauge on an EF, where do you tap in to get the reading from as there are no sensors on the thermostat housing.

may need a t-piece coming from the original position feeding both guage senders. i tried taking mine from furthur down the heater hoses with a 'junction box' type idea & wasn't worth a pinch of s**t. needs to be from the thermo housing. if that doesn't work you could always use the housing from an ea. just look before you buy because the few that i have are different & from same model cars.

This one is broken, but that's the temp sensor. It lives under the upper radiator hose.

You can grab those wires from the ECU. You'd have to figure out which pins.
