hi all, in december i picked up an ef futura, it has got a few things done to
it:

3:9 clutch pack lsd
pacemaker extractors
2.5" mandrel bent exhaust
hi flow cat
wade cam, unsure of the grind
"powerchip" ecu chip
ss induction
K&N Boxed Pod Filter
only just hit 200,000

so i figured it should be a bit of a rocket, im finding it runs about the same
as your average stock ef, which is hugely dissapointing, but the car
has been well taken care of, i know the owner and he didnt thrash it that
hard, so i figure there must be something wrong i havent had it tuned yet
but just wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what to check, go over
or replace, thanks guys.

havent had it dyno'd yet im not to keen on spending 2-3 hundred just for someone to tell me my car is slow, my mates xr6 has 111 @ the rears and it runs dead even with that, the guy who installed all the gear has had a lot of experience with e-series mods, im fairly sure the cam would have been the appropriate grind

Hi There

What model extractors ??
Some are for low / midrange power and torque.
Others more for mid to high range power and torque.
There might be a mis-match between cam & extractors.

Vernier Gear might help ....... give the Cam a tweak or two.

Check / clean Crank Angle Sensor ???

A few degrees off on the cam timing can rob the engine of a fair bit of power. There might be a bit of a vacuum leak which could add to the power loss.

A blocked cat can cause dramas.

Give it a general service (ie. oil, oil filter, fuel filter, spark plug etc.) and see if that makes a difference.

You say it has a chip, but hasn't been on a dyno... could be that the chip doenst suit the mods done?

is the powerchip a generic tune? if so seeing as there isn't any headword done im guessing its a relatively mild cam and may run better on stock ecu

well you asked for advice, then dismiss it even though you dont have a clue.....

A dyno run will cost approx $50-$70 and will tell you fuel/air ratio's, outright power, what revs its making or not making the power.

There is nothing to dyno tune in your car so dont worry about programming fees. If you get a poor figure on the dyno, then your motor has a fault somewhere.....

First thing's first, check the cam timing. Dial it in at the specified lift.

Check the leads or even just replace them and the plugs to see if it helps, may even be a blocked cat converter or collapsed muffler.

thankyou every 1 dor the replies, i have had a few people say that running on a dyno would cost a fair bit, but obviously thats for tuning, thanks for clearing that up,
um the powerchip is just a generic chip it came with the car when i bought it, i generally run the car without it, as far as i can tell there is no difference,
tomorrow im going to change the plugs, leads, oil, filters and coolant, then prob heading to the mechanic later on in the week 4 the timing and a dyno run.

i was also thinking of an xr ecu & fuel reg, i dont really know anything about the difference it will make,
there is very mixed reviews about a difference on this site, but if it will give me sharper changes it might be worth it

i tried contacting wade on saturday with no luck, but i was able to find out the
profile of the cam from the previous owner its a wade 1530, that means nothing
to me but there you go, the specks werent on their online catalogue, i got a printout
from the previous owner tho anyway heres the specks:

Cam lift - Intake 0.379". Exhaust 0.379".
Advertised duration - Intake 258 degrees. Exhaust 258 degrees.
Duration @ 0.050" - Intake 222 degrees. Exhaust 222 degrees.
Advertised timing - In. opens 19 closes 59. Ex. opens 55 closes 23.
Phase angle - 108 degrees.

the cam lift seems a hell of alot higher than the wade generic profiles, i dont know what
that means but there is also no mention of that profile cam on fordmods, he mentioned
that it was a custom grind but i dont know, does anyone know about this grind?

Hi There

Just a couple of things....

1. If its not too much trouble, when you do the leads,
maybe pop the rocker cover off and see if you have vernier gear.
This would help the mechanic when you do the dyno etc.

2. If the cam is a regrind, it could be under or over shimmed on the HLA's.
Although you would probably hear it.

Anyhow, Good Luck

that cam seems to be quite bigger than the popular 1521a from Wade. If it is a regrind then there must be a s**t load of shims in those rocker arms

maybe this 'custom' grind is just s**t and needs a fully worked high comp head to suit, and maybe you should revert to something like a 977b wade cam which finishes up nicely before the redline. Half the problem is your not running a high stall, so even though your running short diff gears, its still taking a while for the auto to reach the power curve of the cam.

And yes, check for vernier gear or buy one, so the mechanic can dial the cam in properly. These cost around 150

Also replace thing like leads, plugs,, fuel filter, reco injectors, coil pack and clean the air filter for peace of mind. The above things shouldnt cost more than 300

And finally ditch the chip........
