As the topic says, there's lots of these kits on eBay and I'm curious as to what they are like? Here's an example: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Ford-EF-EL-6cyl- ... 1|294%3A50

People mention on here to get the AU head gasket, whats the diff? One of the advertisers mentioned that Graphite head gaskets are the 'only' ones worth putting on these motor's, why?

Are head bolts worth upgrading to brand name items (like ARP) or are these fine?

What does 'VRS' stand for?

Cheer's in advance!

VRS-Valve Regrind Set

As far as the quality goes, I would only use ACL or better. The reason being that its a fair chunk of work to change a head gasket and I wouldn't want to be doing it twice just because I skimped on the cost of a gasket. The ACL ones are available on Ebay-around $80 with bolts IIRC.

Hi There

Regarding the PROTORQUE set in the link -
I don't generally like to comment on something I haven't used but I got a PROTORQUE rubber sump gasket for my sons Honda Accord.
The quality was so-so and the bolt holes didn't line up 100% correctly.
Had to get a genuine Honda one.

As above, go for the ACL mid or high spec set ( avoid their 'EZY fit ' set )
Or DURAPRO make a reasonable set. I used the Graphite VRS set on my EA.

The AU gasket is a Multi-Layer Steel ( MLS ). It acts as a sort of heat buffer to offset
the different expansion and contraction rates between the alloy head and iron ? block.
This gasket requires different torque settings to the other fibre or graphite ones.

So the choice is up to you.

I used AUSTRAL head bolts for my EA - about $40 a set.

Good Luck

Cheer's for the replies guys. I've ordered an AU Metal gasket, it was only $41 through Cov's. My EF XR6 Motor has done 157,000kms should I be doing anything to the valves while I'm in there? I'm going to be doing the cam and lifters as well.
