As Title States, what is pinging, and how bad is it?

pinging is a uncontrolled spark. like a bad spark. hard to explain. it's very bad for your engine. engines can be destroyed by pinging

Pinging or detonation can be caused by a few different things including high compresion, advanced spark timing, lean fuel mixtures and insuficient octane in the fuel. And yes it can be fatal.

sort of correct. It isn't bad spark, it is pre-ignition of the air/fuel mix in the cylinder.

which is caused by excesive heat in the combution chamber due to lean mixtures, dont want to sound like a smart a*** just wanting to provide some clarification.

How do you know if your car is pinging ?

It makes a pinging ticking noise under load from the engine.

How do you richen up the fuel then?
I use 98 fuel. Cleaned the fuel system and ran some octane booster and it still pings

sounds like you need the timming retarded then, upping the octane is just the first step to eliminating detonation. check your timming and see how it goes.

has the head ever been off and been shaved? if so how much?

you dont want to richen it any more than nessesary.
or a slight cheat, in some cases a colder heat range plug can help reduce pinging.

but best off checking the timing first, then retard the timing enough to stop the pinging..

Get the timing right first. Set to factory spec, then advance slightly and test drive. Keep doing this until it starts to ping, then retard a little. This should be the optimum setting. Chances are the marks wont be accurate anyway, as another thread on here will testify to.

Ok I will try that. Wich way do you spin the distributed to retard it. Clockwise right?

sorry to sound like a mad noob, but if pinging is pre-ignition or ignition under compression,
then why would retarding the ignition timing of the spark plug make any difference?

if the fuel mixture/compression ratio/octane rating/engine temperature all remain the
ssame, wont the engine still ping?

-mad noob

When the engine is running normally, the flame front in the cylinder moves at about 20 feet per second. Pinging is the flame front moving at about 2,000 feet per second.....hence an explosion, ping!..............That is why ignition timing advances with RPM.....to catch up.....not enough advance.....no power........too much advance...detonation before the ideal position of the piston.
Lean mixtures, and hot spots ( glowing carbon deposits ) can cause pinging.
Hence, polishing the cyl head chambers helps keep the carbon off....nothing to grip to.

preignition is a cause of detonation, not actualy detonation itself

preignition is often caused by elevated combustion chamber temp, caused by lean mixtures or possibly excessive carbon build up on the head.
Retarding the spark has the effect of falsely lowering the compression due to the piston being further through its stroke when the mixture is ignighted.

When dealing with the problem you dont change everything at once, comp ratio you cant change I'd start with fuel, timming then plugs in that order but thats me.
