Nf Fairlane...

Whenever i give it a bit up a hill or sometimes even just overtaking, the temperature shoots up to red in about 4-5 seconds and as soon as i take my foot off the gas, goes straight back down, never to bother me again till the next time i put the foot down. Also the radiator light has started coming on (not losing much water, maybe half the overflow tank every 3-4 days) any ideas????

Either that or your ignition timing is too far advanced. This can cause temps to shoot up pretty quickly.

Head Gasket?

Go to a mechanic and get a compression test done on each cylinder............................

Or take out your spark plugs and have a look at them, also check you oil for milky slime.

can be any thing from about $650 to $1100

it depends on what is found when the head comes off. it could just need a skim and go back on or it could need a full reco. again any thing from $100 to $400.

plus a VRS, head bolts, thermostat, and labor.
