while i'm here, whats the acronym ACL stand for and is it best to use genuine gaskets or after market gaskets (like for the head) also whats the specs of the bolts on the head? is it better to replace them with say high tensile bolts?

also known as a freeze plug. it's the plug used to bloke up the holes left by the casting proces when the block is made

wow that was quick cool nice one, had a feeling thats what they may have been, do they have a tenacy to corrode/falol out? are they a bolt how are they replaced?

ACL Automotive Components Limited

the head bolts are a stretch bolt and should be replaced with the correct aftermarket or genuine bolt.


the plugs are a steel or brass cup shaped item that a an interference fit.
they can corrode away

stretch bolt
stretch's when tightened, so can only be used once.

interference fit
uses friction to stay in. you just tap the new plugs in with a hammer evenly.

you guys are great thankyou so much. so there are some stretch bolts that are better than others, same as welsh plugs?

yes over time they corrode, use a socket & knock it in 2 the block, dont forget 2 remove it,then stick in the new 1, now do them all have fun :P

how hard do you have to knock them in? need a press or a hammer? where can you get after market heads? or how can you make a head and block stronger? also head gaskets, whats better; genuine ford or aftermarket?

the head gaskets, i think the agreed around here is the AU headgasket, as for aftermarket heads, try jim mock motor sport, its performance motors, alted performance. Or you can get yourself an XR6 head, slightly different to a standard head. I dont know if u can actually make the head and block stronger, you can always get the block re machined, re bored, honed and hotanked to clean it up, pretty sure the 4.0L rods are quite strong in standard form, im pretty sure a few of the turbo guys are using them over 300rwkw, some may have had them shotpeened though

wackem with a hammer (hard)yes u can get after market heads, ( yella terra ) if yr gona spend a packet on the motor y not o - ring the block & use a copper gasket??
