350,000 and counting... Although it is leaking water and is due for the fabled AU replacement too...

AU head gasket and bolts for $120 inclusive by the way... Best of luck doing it yourself, I'll be trying! Last time I paid a guy to do it to my 200,000 Monty he totally phucked the whole thing...... About a thousand bucks down the drain... Better check your head is damn straight and not cracking whilst you're there huh?!

Yeah do it yourself or if you have to. Pay that little extra and get someone reputable to do it, like a well known business. That way if there are complications like I had, you can get it redone under warranty.

I paid $550 for parts and labor to do my gasket. But I was left with a pinched timing case that allowed next to no oil to get to the timing chains, over tensioned chain, and leaking tensioner plug and screw. Along with a distinct, mechanical whine from the engine that you could hear clearly in the cabin.
I was also left with a leaky rocker cover gasket that was supplied new.
All this from an experienced ex Ford mechanic!

All have now been fixed...

My EF Mont is at 360k, getting its 3rd gasket. The old man's 97 EL GLI Wagon is at 270k and still going strong, original gasket, had the car since 02 and 120k, no signs of leakage yet

What are some common signs to look out for, when the headgasket is starting to fail?

water vapour out of the exhaust, loss of coolant, to the point of topping up everyday

I have to top my coolant up every week or two and get a lot of water vapour on initial start up combined with a little oil (blue smelly smoke) soon after start up. Head gasket, possibly bent or cracked head along with dying rings / valve stem seals is my diagnoses at this point.

Prescribed treatment is leaning towards AU gasket, AU head bolts, AU short block with a shaved EF head put on it to accommodate the cam and other stuff I have for EF that isn't AU compatible up top.

If you put car in "N" and get someone to floor it and release and floor it and release (etc) you should see all sorts of splatters up to three metres behind the car. The water coming through as steam will condense and hit the ground and black sooty water (or try it backed up to a wall...!)

My dads old EA II has 270,000 + km's on it and hasn't blown the gasket yet
My dads EF with full service history has 210,000km's on it and it hasn't had a gasket replacement mentioned in the books anywhere, we haven't needed to change it either.
My EF II has 288,000 km's on it, and its not in the books anywhere but the books stop at 250,000...

Its probably something to do with the engine + head heating up / cooling down too quick... eg.. burnouts, topping up with cold water when the engine is hot... or even worse keep topping it up every 5 mins with cold water...

Thats my opinion anyway
Every falcon I have seen soo far with a blown head gasket has been pretty poorly looked after... dents everywhere, never washed, junk everywhere inside... just unloved falcons... a few were driven by women who would probably never get the car serviced... and keep driving the car even if warning lights / sirens were ringing / flashing at them.

I don't work, but I've seen a fair few while doing work placement... :P

have done 224,000 had it since new, last week coolant started leaking from headgasket, car drives good and temperature is still fine, but coolant has dropped a few cms closer to MIN level since last week.
What is the best to add to top up:
coolant?
normal water?
distilled water?

thanks
