people have added a second air intake by putting a hole in the bottom of the air box and dropping a pipe down there to get air from the brake duct, wouldn't be hard at all!

Gotta be careful with intakes that are mounted too close to the ground as you don't want to get a gut ful of water in the wet!
Facing forward is better, behind the brake vent or so will be good!
Post some pics when you are done!

the thing is though the water then has to travel all the way up the pipe and then through the filter to get in.
if you still retain your original scoop aswell chances of this happening are near none as air is lighter than water, so the engine will rather suck the air through the old scoop above the water than the water up the new scoop.

PVC would be fine. Alternatively you can get flexible piping (kinda like agpipe without all the holes in it!)

I thought about this, but wonder what the legal concerns are..

Although I did that exact mod on my VL, I'd rather keep my EL kinda legal.

I did it when the ED was NA, used a 4in pvc pipe ect and worked very well... well worth the effort

On the 'Picking up water' subject, as long as theres a vertical section it should be all good. Actually, i dunno what design the EL Airbox has... Does the snorkel go into the bottom half, opposite to an ED 6?
Cause if it does, just have the snorkel as close to the bottom of the airbox as possible, so any water that DOES get in, just drains out.

you'll end up sucking in alot of dust. get a long flexi hose and channeled from the front grill.

Yes the EF/EL air box is upside down to the EA-ED one, ie air goes in the bottom half.

There is flexible aluminium piping on ebay that would be worth a look at it for what you have planned.

I'd take her for a quick spin with all the intake tubing removed (preferably in the cold), just to see how much you're losing.

Grab the xr8 snorkel before you go cutting holes, for $34 you won't regret it. I put mine in today (stock EL futura), and it does breathe a bit better, particularly at higher rpm.

You could also look at replacing the intake tubing feeding the engine, be it the ever-popular mandrel bent, or BA tubing like Spork is experimenting with here:

OR you could hang the pod filter out the front of the brake duct and be fully sick brooo!!

I have done this mod to my 5.0. I used a 5in hole saw and cut a hole through the bottom of the airbox. Then ran some 4 inch flexible tubing( as used in aircon systems for houses). The reason i used this is there is the ABS Controller directly below the airbox( at least it is on the EF Ghia) and the tubing reduces to something like 2 inches tall and 5 inches wide. This then runs down to the cornaer light spot. I also fitted the XR8 snorkel as well.
