I am sure it is only coincidental - but I installed an amp and sub in my Fairlane a few days ago..
Thereafter there has been a whirring sound in the front of my engine - almost like the wheels of a skateboard when you spin them.. A bearing noise or something I would say.. Any ideas? I soaped up the belts just incase they were making the noise but no luck. Also is a bit harder to start - need to keep my foot on the accelerator when starting the car for a few seconds or the engine just stalls... Drives well still though - just an annoying noise/startup issue.

No... I didn't report the loud banging noise coming from the boot - or the fact that the entire car rattles and shakes - that isn't a problem for me. I am more concerned about whirring noises at the moment..

if there is a wering noise and you have to keep the revs up to first strt it i would be checking the charge rate on the alternator if the xtra load has made it s**t itself also if the power steering pump is leaking onto it it will not be helping the situitation

I did replace the regulator about a year ago, but the alt was probably the original one.. I will check it in the morning.. charging rate would be around 14volt?

13.8 is ok if its below check it out of the back off the alternator and thats all good its the leads to the battery and also clean all your earths, if the alternator is noisy its gonna be s**t and you will need a reco or a secondhandi my advice is a new one and make sure theres no oil getting on it

I did buy a second hand one from pick-a-part a while ago before I changed the regulator - but yes I agree, if it has crapped itself then I would probably be better off putting in a new one - esp with the extra power drain..

thanks mate - Checked on startup - without any load - 14.3v or so.
So not alternator that is making a whirring noise - Think it might be a pulley or a the water pump.. will investigate futher later. In regards to starting the car: I have just noticed that I might have moved the diaphragm that sits under the RHS guard when placing the 12V power cable through the bonnet release hole.. maybe it is a bit sensitive to being prodded? I need to step on the petrol for a little after I start the car so it will idle properly - but if i just start it without pressing the accelerator it will just stall. And sometimes in the past the engine surges when it has just started... (fast idle, slow idle, fast idle, so on)

It is getting worse... sort of like a scraping noise like someone is using a high pressure hose to spray something or steam is blowing off - a hissing noise maybe....? Hard to explain and hard to locate..
Just know it is coming from the front of the engine somewhere.. Any ideas... anyone? alternator works well..

Thanks for the assistance everyone - I took the two outer belts off and no luck... then I took the AC belt off and the noise stopped.
It was the AC belt adjuster pully - totally gone. I took the belt off and ran it - starts and idles properly now. Must have been the resistance of the broken pulley that stopped it idling properly also. No problems anyway - the AC is stuffed anyway (gas leak).. probably get a bit more power/economy without it now.

i had this exact same problem...and now it is completed fecked. makes a grinding noise when the a/c is on and just idling...car will generally stall.
if just cruising it has made the car stall aswell. strangely enough from memory mine started to do it once i had installed my sub and amp..

Pretty wierd - but most likely a coincidence, regarding the amp install... ! It wouldn't be hard to fix if it is just the ac belt pulley - and better for economy/reducing engine wear as the bad pulley creates resistance (enough resistance to stall the engine). Better yet if your AC is not working - just remove the belt and go for it.
