We would very much like to put to rest the question of whether or not the XR6 camshaft ( E series ) is different to the standard cam.

If there is a Fordmods member, preferably in Melbourne, who knows without doubt that they have an XR6 cam lying around, not in an engine obviously, we would like to borrow it?

We will put it through our checking equipment and will post the result even if it shows that we are in the wrong. What's in it for you you might ask....absolutely nothing. Well at least we're honest.

Cheers

thats a very worthwhile project , i would like to see the results to ,cause your reply went against everything i had been told both here and else where,,i'm not doubting your honesty just looking for a final answere,,while i'm at it what would the cost be for a 1604 cam for the auto ea if i supply a cam first,,and can it be any cam so long as it's a viable cam it would be the EF one as i'd like to keep the standard EA cam.i hope that made sence. i put a EF cam in and everything is ok except i've only noticed a gain in the mid range and i had to bump the idle up as it started to go funny,,would the 1604 fix all this and give better overall responce and a good steady idle.

To PEPSIMAX

The feedback that we have received to date indicates that the idle with the 1604 cam is very smooth. The 1604 is an improvement on the standard EF. The EF is a "milder" cam than the EA.

To grind your cam to the 1604 is $122.10 inc. GST. You will need to fit an extra standard shim. ie. 2 std shims in all. Freight charges, if applicable, are your responsibility.

Cheers

i have two cam shafts at the moment, the EF in the car at the moment and the EA one which is on the shelf,

i was looking at exchanging one of them for a 1604,not to have it reground, unless it works out to be the same price,

now would i need to buy one lot of shims or two??

i will more than likely send the EF cam as i want to keep the standard EA one..

We can do an exchange cam for you which will cost an additional $110.00 inc. GST. This is a refundable deposit which is repaid when you return a suitable replacement cam.
You only need 1 set of shims because you've already got 1 set in the engine.

the XR6 cam IS different.

standard cam is --- IN opens @ 16 BTDC @ 0.045mm lift
----------------------- IN closes @ 68 ABDC @ 0.085mm lift
------------------------EX opens @ 62 BBDC @ 0.053mm lift
------------------------EX closes @ 18 ATDC @0.085mm lift

XR6 CAM is ------IN opens @ 14 BTDC at the same lift as above
-----------------------IN closes @ 70 ABDC
-----------------------EX opens @ 58 BBDC
-----------------------EX closes @ 22ATDC

Both cams make the max lift at the same point intake @ 114 ATDC
------------------------------------------------------exhaust @ 114 BTDC

the above was taken from page 8-4-2 of the ford factory workshop manual for EF FALCONS

if any one does not agree you can take it up with ford. I think they now what cams they make

having fitted an EF XR6 cam into an EB GLI i can also tell you that there is a power gain to be had. although the gain is not worth the cost of the cam. i only did it because i had one laying around in my shed

even if you don't keep the XR6 one later on you can sell it for more then you could sell an ea one for

No problem, it's your choice. Whichever is the easiest for you.
