You are probably better off having the transmission serviced and have a full flush (10 litres). If they 'service' it, some places only drain the oil in the pan and not out of the torque convertor.

As for the engine, the flush would also be a good idea. However I'd get professional advice first (Ford perhaps).

Can you be more specific as to the problem of the transmission?

Re the transmition problem, I would like to take it for a test drive, but I pretty much put an end to that until I dump the engine oil.

We live on a hill. My wife told me that she drive out of the garage (pretty much idle downhill out of the drive), and the UP the hill in second gear as usual. about 50meters up the hill, it would start to rev up (sounds similar to slipping clutch in a manual). She would then roll back down the hill in reverse, wait a few seconds and then drive up the hill fine.

It has only happened twice the last two mornings.

For the rest of its travels, it would behave fine. we live 800meters up, so it gets a nice workout in the arvo, with no ill effects of slipping the last two afternoons. though, she is pretty gentle with the AU.

on the drivers side of the gearbox there is a 16mm headed filler plug, the oil level should be at the bottom of this when the gearbox is WARM. not cold or hot as this will lead to it being over full or under full... iirc ford define warm as having been driven normally for around 6 minutes... gotta wonder y sometimes...
