My wife has taken custody of my AU Falcon and has used it as a daily driver for the last 12months.

She told me that the other day, the transmition was slipping for the first minute of driving. She was a good girl, waited a moment and tried again with no worries for the rest of the day.

So, this is where I step in, pop the bonnet and check the fluid level of what I assumed was the Transmition - hell, I dont pop the bonnet on this girl except for the 5000km engine oil dumps.

Anyways, end result is, I had added 500mls of fresh transmition oil to the engine oil sump. I couldnt beleive what I had done!

When I realised, I started searching for the Tranmition dipstick and there is none - must be a sealed unit?? damn.

So, will this cause any problems? Can I safely drive it down the shops to get some fresh oil and a new filter (and probably an engine oil flush would be a good idea)? I dont think there would be any dangerous contaminents for the engine, but I just dont know?

Then, whatabout the transmition? Does it sound like it is low on fluid like I suspected? I guess I really should take it to a transmition specialist to have it serviced and change the fluid, since I have already messed up ;-) but can it be done at home on the AU?

Thanks, James.

no clue, id be saying it should be ok, get someone else to take you to get oil and a filter, just leave the car where it is and drop the oil out, pour in some thin stuff to wash it through, then fill it with oil again.

i think we can let up on chunkz for the wheel thing now.

take the car to a trans place and get them to look at it could be a sign of proplems to come.

they took the trans dipstick out so people would stop putting engine oil down there, maybe they need to get rid of the oil filler too?

I service and repair forklifts for a living. One of our customers has a forklift with a stuffed hydraulic pump front seal. The seal leaks and fills the engine. Every 6-8 months we get called up to empty the now overfilled sump and fill both the engine and hydraulic tank back up with hydraulic oil. Last time I emptied the engine it was full of white metal (bearing).

the AU auto can be done at home like any other auto

you just need to remeber there is a filler plug on the side of the box the correct level is at the bottom of that plug hole.

just slightly over fill it and let the exess drain out

You arent by any chance related to chunkz are you????

joking mate!

Well yeah as said thats why they took the tranny dipstick out so the engine oil wouldnt go into the transmission.
As waggin said just look for the number 710 and you will find where the oil goes.

hahah! 710! I do feel a bit blonde, so I guess it fits eh :)

though, I did hear of someone that filled their engine oil to the top of the rocker cover, with water. Can anyone say CREAMY?

Where is a link to CHUNKZ topic? need a bit of humour directed at someone else to ease the pain.

Ohhh thats old. He put a spare wheel on backwards.
But yeah if you dont know much about cars and do it without instruction, then it can happen. But the easiest way to tell is, the engine oil stuff is attached to the engine, the tranny dipstick is normally drivers side, up against the body work away from the engine. Near the brake master cylinder.

Just so you dont pass me off as a complete knob, I can 'kind of' explain....

Our other car is a Landrover and the Transmition dipstick is Yellow, funny enough, it constantly needs trans fluid. I constantly have to top it up via the trans dipstick. When i popped the hood on the falcon, I had just arrived back from a 5hour bikeride from Dubbo and just looked for the colourcoded Yellow Dipstick (not thinking obviously, until it was too late).

so, it did go in the dipstick hole (not the rocker cover), but wrong hole eh ;)
