So I've got a 2004 xr6 non turbo auto had a full exhaust system put on today and asked for Pacemaker extractors 4490, high flow cat and a lukey 2.5inch catback. What I got was the comp extractors 4495, high flow cat, 4inch hotdog as the center muffler and a manta muffler. Taking it back in tomorrow to have the hotdog removed as it's to loud in the car, was wonderig if I sould tell them to put the 4490 extractors or just leave the comp ones on?

Also is there any gain over having the hotdog and just a normal muffler?

You've stepped into a perennial debate. The 4495 is the same design as the 4480 in the SOHC AU and prior engines - 6 into 3 into 1 - Pacemaker call these "Competition" headers. The 4490 is the same design as the 4499 - 6 into 2 into 1. There has been heaps on discussion on this forum about which is better.

In theory, one will give most benefit at higher rpm and the other at low- to mid-rpm; but only back to back dyno runs on the same engine and dyno would tell which is which. I would love to see this - to settle the question once and for all.

There are plenty of engines producing excellent power with a 6-2-1 design like PH4499/4490. By all accounts, the JMM headers perform very well (but are pricey), and they use this design. The Coby headers in my EF XR6 are this design and produce over 150rwkw at 5500rpm with a mild cam (one step up from XR6).

But the engines I have seen with the highest power tend to use the PH4480/4495 "Comp" 6-3-1 design (check out Bullet Performance Racing's website). I interpret that to mean these are better for top end power.

I expect both would give a noticeable improvement in performance, and you would likely be happy with either. Personally, I prefer the sound of the 4480/4495, and am keeping my eye open for a good deal on a set of 4480s for my AU2 XR6 VCT.

I'll be towing a few things so wouldn't the 4490 be better? And say a race from the lights the 4490 would get the jump on the 4495 right?

Why don't you take your car back to the exhaust place and get them to fit what you asked for in the first place?

In my experience, the customer gets to decide what they buy!!

Yeah that's what I've made them do with the muffler I told them I didn't want anything to loud so why put a hotdog on the car? Was just wondering was it worth keeping the com headers on or getting the 4490's If I really need the 4490's more I guess I could sell the comp ones and buy the 4490's instead.

You won't feel a difference between the two. It is probably like 2-3nm of Difference at certain RPM's.

the extractors is pretty much personal preference, as thekrazeD said the difference would most likely on my small. personal ive got 4490 on my car, as since the car never sees a track or strip, i want my power to start down low.

Yeah I'd rather my power start down low as I'll never take it to the drag strip or track. So would I be better off with the 4490's or should I just keep the 4495's?

personally i would go back and get what i payed for/ordered. but call them up and explain what happened before driving in. no one like a angry customer when they may already be busy. if they refuse to correct their error chase it further.

I've called them up and explained what happened, they also put a hotdog as the centre muffler after I told them I wanted the car to be quiet so I called back and booked it in for them to put a muffler like I asked And I also said about the 4495's and he said that they're better for low down and higher up so yeah :S think he's wrong on that one. Might take them off and sell them and buy 4490's

Mate, stick to your guns and demand what you ordered and paid for.

You shouldn't have to go through the rigmoral of selling brand new headers and taking a massive hit so that you can buy the ones they were supposed to supply in the first place!!

As for his 'they're better for both' BS... what a spanker!!

Is there a noticeable difference in them say from like 0 - 100? Say i raced an exact same car exact same mods but with the 4490's instead would there be any difference?
