For a while now i've been pushin myself to get carputer in the car.

i have the 8" touch screen mounted, lappy just sitting in boot atm, but what was holding me up was getting the sound into the headunit..

so on saturday i went into supercheap and got a 6disc sony stacker for $234.. just so i could get the inputs on my headunit to work.

got that mounted up and now i basically have functioning system going. Software on the lappy is the next issue!

Will post some pics up later perhaps, if not tomorrow.

My boots startin to look snazzy with amp mounted on the side and stacker on the lip below the rear window!

So you are running sound through a stacker? care to elaborate? Would it not be easier to just use an FM modulator?

Congrats on the install!

Cheers

Lol, i only just removed mine (wanted a PC at home and thinking of something different to setup in the car). So sing out if you have any Q's...

The real easiest way is to get a head unit with auxillary input...

dregg69:

i got that 8" touch screen off ebay for $320 + shipping. normal screens are cheap enough, the touch screen is where the price ramps up.

justfordima:

Well I have a sony head unit that doesnt have dedicated auxillary inputs. Only a stacker input which requires something to talk to on the data bus before it'll enable the input. So having a stacker allows me to hook up the data and connect my pc to the sound input. Eventually i'll have a rca switch so i can just toggle between the 2 inputs.

I had an fm modulator but the sound was shocking. Heaps of noise, at the moment i have a slight whine which i'm assuming is coming from the lappy as its not there on normal cd playback.

bentles:

Easiest yes, Really quiet, mmhmm. Also seeing as its through my headunit i can switch to cd playback, or radio. And with the rca switch i can flick to stacker input.

martin:

Did you run any particular software? like i know theres mediacar etc out there just haven't bene bothered to get around to testing it. Might do that today. At the moment i just have winamp running on it and windows media player for pr0n/music videos/movies.

I just ran WinXP with media player for items specified above... mediacar good if you dont want it to look like a computer is running the show...

Wouldn't the easiest way to set up a carputer be to use an Xbox or a laptop with tv out. With the laptop you can get an external USB DVD player, mount that were your CD player usually goes. And presto, connect you screens to the TV out on the laptop and your done.
