Pull it out and (gently) blow some compressed air thru it. My ute had the same issue from all the dusty roads it sees. Blew it out and it was better but not perfect (but it's a real old unit  )

Probably pay to pull the whole thing out. What sort is it?

Its possible. My BA doesn't particularly like burnt cds. I've also found that some burnable cds are better than others. The ones I've had the most trouble with are the Imation ones.
The cd player in my ute was a Pioneer one.
