Hi Guys
I was wondering which would be the best to go with when selecting a 12" sub. Both the Clarion and Sony are the same size and roughly the same watts and rms. So is basically left up to personal preference on branding or does one do it better than the other?? Cheers |

Kenwood are pretty average, have a listen to Hertz, Alpine type R and type X and Polk do decent subs

Get the sony's then you wont feel so bad if they are stolen...
  Clarion do make some good gear from what I've heard, but I have never listened to it personally. Your best bet is to try to listen to as many subs as possible and choose the one you like in your budget range. |

Stone knows what hes talking about, could add a few to his list myself.
If its only between the clarion and sony (not a fan of either) I would go the clarion. Sony suck when it comes to car audio simple as that.

Also he probably wants somthing he can buy from a local store, not import from the US or UK... Re: the topic, I would go Clarion, Sony speakers went out for me with the original Xplods, but honestly, those $60 subs in the box from Repco pump pretty hard with 2 hooked to the 900W Jensen amp. Obviously the more you spend the "better" the stuff will be, but it dosnt mean there's anything wrong with the "cheaper" stuff. And it's cheaper to replace when (not if lol) you blow somthing.

I am sure giving other options won't hurt the OP. +1 to Clarion over Sony...personally I would by neither but that's obviously personal preference/budget (I am running Pioneer so not any better). If I had the money DD subs ring well in my ears. Also...not sure about you, but I have never blown a sub. I have gone through 4 or 5 different subs not because they died, but because I wanted more loudness and change of style. If you blow your subs...I think you should really learn how to tune to suit the sub...not your ears and cool factor of loudness.

Clarion would be the way to go mate! i ran two 12" sonys and i just thought the bass wasnt hard enough (where you can feel it trying to kick your heart out) i found the sonys were moor boomy rather then hard and strong. ive been taking weeks to find a new sub and i would say afgter testing them instore clarion is up there on the list.

One thing to remember about subs is that 'boomyness' does not inherently come from the sub.
Most of the boomyness comes from the sub being fitted in a non-ideal enclosure. An enclosure can make a cheap sub behave very well, sure it might not be able to go as low as a more expensive brand, but it can be made to sound very good in it's workable range. Just as a crap speaker install in your door can make expensive speakers sound like a**, the same goes for a lot of subs in prefab boxes. |
