Only just figured this out the other day but you can turn on the factory sound systems without the keys in the car.
I was messing around with it while I had the keys in my pocket and when it came on it scared the crap out of me. This is on my EL XR8

Very different setup than my EF XR6 that has aftermarket stereo that doesnt turn on unless the keys are in the key on engine off position. It doesnt come on in the accessorys position only the start position.

Need to fix the wiring I guess but I got no clue.

Hey Timmeh ....

On my EF XR6 the stereo only comes on once the ignition is in the Accessories position.
If your EF XR6 only comes on in the start position someone has screwed up the installation and used the incorrect power feed.

Have a look in the loom where your current stero is connected and see if you can find a power supply that comes on when the ignition is turned to ACC, easiest way is to use a test light.

As for your EL comming on without keys in the ignition sounds a bit sus as well as I'm sure that it also should come on with ignitiuon in the ACC position.

Maybe some EL XR8 owners can confirm this one way or the other.

the series 2 ef's will allow the stereo to play without the key but will shut off after an hour.

My premo will play without key.

Might have to go to an auto electrician.
You would of thought when the factory unit got taken out you'd use the same wires for power.

My old EB series 2 falcon had this feature. Allows the stereo to play for 1 hour without keys on.

My premium sound system does that too. Second that for my Dad's Cougar as well - the Cougar actually says "1 Hour" in the display window for a second then goes to the radio.

yeh, thats factory.

aftermarket units wont do it however, i used a adaptor wiring harness and my after market wont do it.

it will be to do with the way the aftermarket ones work.

at a guess the factory ones will use the constant (memory) wire to power the radio for that time period.
