Hey, hopefully someone can reccomend me a good head unit to use on my car.

Im hoping not to spend more than $550, needs iPhone connectivity and hopefully takes up two slots so I wont need to install a pocket.

Thanks!

Bought the new head unit yesterday, the guy gave it to me for $450!

The guy at the shop threw in the EL connecting cable and wired it up to the Alpine wires for me, he said the alpine - ISO cables fail often and he doesnt like them.

He also threw in the Bluetooth kit free http://www.alpine.com.au/showItem.php?item_id=120 the remote http://www.alpine.com.au/showItem.php?item_id=139 and the high-speed iPhone cable http://www.alpine.com.au/showItem.php?item_id=124

Thats $447 worth of stuff free =D

I tried to install the unit last night, got a mate to come around with the t-20 Torx screwdriver but wow they where honestly tighter than a nuns C***!

Im going to drive over to the shop this arvo and get them to loosen them, we couldnt haha.

drill them out

not sure how the alpine wiring harness has any more chance of failing then the EL adaptor harness, but at least he soldered them together for you.

Yeah I'm taking it to the shop this arvo after work to see if they can get them out for me. Otherwise I'll have to borrow a mates drill (my tool set extends to a pack of screwdrivers from go-lo haha)

although im not a fan of JVC electronics that headunit is a really good buy that FordFairmont suggested as it had 24bit DAC audio decoder all my computers run audio out on 24Bit and the difference between ur regular 16bit audio and the 24bit is huge if your after clarity that can be turned up really loud the JVC would rule

idk with car speakers or not but in computers to run 24bit audio u need special speakers & cables to handle it might be the same for cars prob not idk(there is alot of small differences in car and computer audio strangely enough) not sure as ur running ur audio with a extra 8 bits attached so it may be harder for certain cables/speakers to handle they usually are dead silent when they have been over flown with 24bit audio on 16 bit systems or in some cases if they try to handle it they distort

that unit surprised me for having 24bit DAC as in car headunits to get this usually $1000 min i have been looking for a 24bit DAC headunit and i might consider that at a later date as alpine want $1800 for there version and pioneer want $1100

another issue u might want to look into is does the headunit upscale the audio to 24bit if not how to goes about getting it there on my computer i have to have a expensive sound card $800 worth to upscale the audio to 24bit for me

it even had handsfree mobile phone bluetooth calling(feature that comes in handy especially if people ring u as much as me)...its a really good buy for a bang for ya buck go for the JVC

Ban.

24 bit does not mean better SQ than even 1 bit. Most people wont be able to pick the difference between 16-24 either. When I say most, I mean pretty much everyone.

I dont think you understand how it actually works too.. you're not running an extra 8 bits of audio. Its how the data is processed - 24 bit processes two 8 bit streams and then uses the other 8 bits as error correction.

Can you stop posting s**t now? Your 'advice' is nothing short of comical, as you think its actually 100% fact.

A DAC with a higher bit rate (i.e. 24bit) doesn't mean s**t if the original ADC was only say 8bit or even less; it's just a waste of a good DAC. If you're referring to X-Fi's "crystalizer", it is really just a fancy equaliser/booster. The crystalizer just accentuates some parts to provide a more dynamic sound. You can't make an 8bit a 24bit without knowing the original information the 8bit is derived from. It will, and does sound better but not because it has more bits per se.

nope not X-Fi s**t

its actually a chip made by cmedia then its processed on the card through to FFmpeg(partly Cpu based) then straight to the output i have a cpu equalizer running that helps the MP3 files sorta like X-Fi so all this make my cpu hit about 20% when playing audio but sounds good and my audio cards memory gets hell hot to i know its not pure 24bit but its pretty close

it was a pretty expensive audio card back 3 yrs ago when i built my comp

it must be a pretty f**k incredible chip to not only restore the dynamic range lost when you compress to MP3, but to also take the recording back to the 24bit it was mastered at
