Guys I'm starting to find more and more that my Alpine 171's are fairly harsh up loud, and that the tweeters are too in your face, and ear fatiguing, where I have to turn it down. I think the bass is nice from them, but even the mids are hard with the vocals. If you amp them up too loud the S's vocals become exaggerated and shrilly.

Can anyone recommend some brands of 6.5" splits that have silk dome tweeters.
The current ones are under the tweeter plate, I might try putting a layer of acoustic speaker material under the grilles and see if that helps.

I run them using a Pioneer 6100F amp, and a JVC AVX2 HU.
They were harsh with my Kenwood audio visual HU as well.

go a decent set of focal splits (either K2 or polyglass2), they have sexual tweeters...haha they weigh s**t for a tweeter and sound unreal cause even though they have a sensitivity of like 96 or something like that they sitll have a very linear dB curve

Cool I'll have a look at these on the net. I knew I should have been a bit more serious when I replaced my front speakers. Anyone have the same issues with the Alpines, in particular the 171A's?

Dynaudio

All make some very nice silk or soft dome tweeters.

Yeah, I was reasonably happy with the standard MD100 tweeters with my Dynaudios, but now I have a high-end set of splits with an aluminium dome tweeter which creams the Dynaudios... I think it's the quality of the speaker not that material that makes the bigest difference, don't limit yourself.
