Has anyone thought of building a small computer for playing music and DVDs in your car?
Has anyone done anything like this at all?

Im looking at getting 1 of the new Alpine screens for my car and came up with this idea.

Im actually considering buying computer parts and building a small computer.

I looked at what i would need and this is the list that i came up with:
1) Motherboard (with Pentium 4 CPU, 512mb RAM & power supply)
2) 60 GIG Hard drive
3) ATI video card with composite out (to plug into a monitor at the front)
4) DVD ROM (DVD player)
5) Wireless Mouse & Keyboard
Then also have a USB external hard drive if i ever want to load new things onto the PC

All up about $800
a lot cheaper and more convenient than the Alpine seperate hard drive for storing music which is about $1600 alone!

This way i can load and store my original DVDs or music on the computer and play it from there on the alpine screen through my car stereo system
Also while driving, passengers can play games like GTA or something!?

does anyone think im going too far? lol
This is some real Pimp My Ride sh*t
what can i say, i like my music and movies

a good source of info is www.mp3car.com

Also, powering the computer is an issue you need to address, and a mouse is all good and well, but not in a car, in my opinion anyway. Go the touch screen.

Cheers

Oh sorry the screen im looking at is touch screen but if somebody wants to control it from the backseat a wireless mouse would be good also

ill check that site out
its just i havent really seen anyone on here talk about it that all

powering the computer i dont think will be too hard.
im looking at buying a high power convertor to change the power from 12v to 240v so that i can plug in the PC if that will work

best way to power it is to look at a DC-DC power supply, which can be had for around the $100 mark.
opus is probably the best brand.

some of them also have shutdown control etc, which uses the igntion signal to start up / shut down the pc, rather than just do a hard shut off if you kill the power like an inverter would.

if you are running a carputer look at a older pc, maby p3 ish, just to keep your power consumption down.

I did a car computer a few years back. I got rid of it because it was too difficult to control, and boot up was slow.

These days however, they've improved a fair bit in both respect. But I now have a pioneer DVD head unit.

atleast with a P4 as your carputer you wouldnt need to run your heater anymore!

im looking at a few options to set one up, 1 is some leftover hardware i have here (P3600 uatx board 256 RAM 60GB HDD) the other is to buy one of the VIA mini ITX motherboards and start from there, id go the touchscreen route as well

I sorta ran into a brick wall...

im looking at getting 1 of the new alpine touch screens but i will not be able to use the touch screen for the computer only dvd menus and the radio...

was a good idea at the time... not too sure if im gonna go ahead with it now coz i really wanted to have the radio and computer using the same screen...
not too sure if its possible??

i would need 2 different screens if i want to use the alpine unit true??

The other reason i was looking at a power convertor is if i wanted to charge a lap top or plug something in that needed a power supply

PS2 maybe?

so not too sure about the computer thing now unless somebody knows of a way to have the computer and a radio running off the same screen?

get a wireless card for ur computer and run internet radio or get an rf tuner for ur comp and run ur aerial into it :P as far as charging ur laptop goes, same principle, can use a 12v dc charger from jaycar, and ps2, bah waste of time :P

I think ive made my decision...

im going to get the alpine monitor which has an A/V input,
if i ever want a PC in my car ill take my new laptop which has A/V out and plug it into my head unit

sounds so much easier lol

do others agree this is a better solution?

Im not saying that i want to install a PS2 in my car, only if i ever want to plug 1 in

Id never want to install one permanently, i dont see the point because i would hardly use it

If im going somewhere with friends for a long drive, gives them something else to do on the way.

also this way id have the flexibility to plug and un-plug a laptop or PS2

on my own id prob just throw in a DVD full of MP3's

so now ive gone off the carputer idea
i talked myself out of it lol
