One of my rear speakers blew in my Falcon ED Gli and was thinking of replacing the system.
I just need the basic 4 speaker system and head unit to replace the stock (probably get a subwoofer later on). Also with the head unit itself do the better quality ones project better sound? My budget is $600 and I'd even be happy with a head unit and just 2 rear speakers and use the stock front speakers if $500 isn't enough for a decent setup What would you recommend? |

in my experience when it comes to sound you get what you pay for.
My reccommendation for a stereo on a budget is a pioneer mp3/wma head unit (at least) $200-$300 and 4 x six inch JBL three ways which are about $110-$120 a pair. All can be found at strathfield

Hunt on eBay. I did my entire stereo for about a grand. Check out my progress thread for details.
IMO JVC make awesome budget heads. Alpine make the best when it comes to all out SQ yet impossible to use heads. And for budget speakers Soundstream, JBL or Pioneer make awesome speakers. If you don't mind being patient and hunting around for good prices then you will end up with an awesome stereo for well under $500.

places seem to always have deals on headunits and speaker combos. there is one floating around at the moment, sony mp3 headunit and 2 6 inch splits and 2 6 inch 3 ways for like 450 or something, just shop around

Sony speakers are s**t. Save up an extra 400 bucks and get some decent splits for the front ($300) 4 way amp ($400) and some 6 inch 3 way speakers at that back ($150) plus some 4gauge wiring plus misc ($150) Those are just approx prices.

I agree. Save up an extra coupla' hundred, be patient and do it properly. Too many people just go out to Strathfield or Supercrap and throw away hundreds of dollars on a sub-standard stereo package when they could get an awesome system for just a little more if they shop around and do it properly. Dont be a statistic! Shop around!

get a good head unit because that determens what sound you get piorneer and put six inch in the reah about 90 for clairons and get some splits for the front about 150 then go sub later

I made my first system for around $700 and I was more then happy with how it went. By yourself a jaycare 4x100 amp (there is a few for sale on caraudioaustralia.com now) for about $200 then a set of jaycar kevlar splits for $130. You can also pickup a decent enough head unit from caraudioaustralia forums for $200. Just get something with a decent set of preouts and MP3 and you will be right. I picked up my first eclipse sub for $70 and my brother still uses it now. You can get plenty and I mean plenty of decent subs under $200 if you look hard enough. The worst thing you can do is just walk into autobarn/supercheap/strathfield and ask them. Buy 2nd hand off forums and you will be happy. I still wish I had my DD2012 sub that I brought for $130

sound stream 6inchs are great that will take up about $100 but you can get them down to $80 just tell them thats what your mate payed for them.
then get a good quality head unit id sudjest pioneer mp3 you can get a good one for about $350 upwards. best advise i can give you: dont pay what the shops ask, shop around and make them compete for your business.

hey guys, it was specified budget was $600.
i would say spend $200 - $250 on headunit (as you can get a decent headunit for this price)..anything of pioneer, alpine, jvc origin...personally i believe pioneer are the easiest to use, and its only in higher up units where alpine offer better tuning ability. for $250 you could get alpine type r 5.25in splits to go in the front which perform well...hertz esk165 also perform well for $200, but i had issues fitting them in my door for the back just get some 6in coaxials which can be had for $100 and there's $600...also while ebay can have great bargains i have never been a fan of buying audio gear off their (especially headunits) as warranty etc can be a problem..plus most audio places will knock their prices down a bit anyway.

Do I really need an amp yet? I find the stock speakers in my ED are loud enough for my needs and that's before they get distorted. I could always add an amp later on? Remember Only my front 2 speakers work. I could live 3 months on them and then replace them. Okay heres what I'd do. Buy 2nd hand gear. I got my >$250 component speakers for $60 delivered, unopened. I got my >$500 (I think initial retail was approaching $1000) Alpine amp for $170. I bought a set of Pioneer 6" coaxials for $80 new from Strath, and a Pioneer DEH P4850MP MP3 player for around $200 new also from Strath. I'd recommend buying most if not all 2nd hand gear. But be careful. Also, if you want to do it cheaper again, dont worry about rear speakers, simply put the fronts in the rear when you upgrade the fronts. I put the Pioneer coaxials in the front straight from the headunit and it was 50 times better than the stockers. |

400 i found you can get a decent non sub system 200 ish for a some what decent Head Unit..... say roughyl 50 to 90 dollars for front speakers and 50 to 100 for some nice rear speakers
all i got is some old f**k pioneer 6x9 and the stock standard ford 4 in the front it pumps

Spend money on front speakers, not rear. Where do you sit? Where do you want the good noise? exactly.
RRP on those Type R splits is $399, but thats for the new model. I'd expect those would have a sell new around 250. IMO, theyre already overpriced. And that box is called a crossover. It splits the midrange/midbass from the highs, and sends the mid to the 6 and the highs to the tweeters. Component speakers (which is what they are) absolutely crap all over coaxials, but really you need an amp to appreciate the extra cost. |
