What will you be running from it?

concorde, got a cheapie ($125) 600W job from strathfield to run a LCD monitor (part of DVD setup), it produced so much electrical noise the picture quality was s**t, it had scrolling lines over it and a noticeable hum was present in the stereo. Went and spent $250 on a 600W one from Jaycar, it is perfect, no noise on the screen (or stereo).

Just FYI.

a 150W one would run an xbox ok. It's the quality of the device not it's supposed rating that determines any noise/interferance

My above story involves an xbox (in addition to incar DVD system), + 2x 19" LCDs. So the 600W powertech (aka jaycar) was purchased to handle the lot. Turns out we've found some LCDs that have 12V inputs :)

Theres 3 basic types of inverter - square wave, modified sine wave, and pure sine wav.

I bought a square wave job a while ago, and I get the same horizontal line interference as described earlier. I would steer clear of these if you intend on running anything audio/visual.

From what i've heard (don't quote me though), the modified sine wav's are ok for most AV stuff, and the pure sine's are more efficient.

The jaycar catalog explains them a bit better.
