am about to purchase a new HU and notice on the new one it has 4.0v pre outs (cable connection for amps), does this mean they give out a better signal then the usual 2.5v preouts?
might sound like noob question but better to be safe then sorry....

Yes, generally the higher the voltage on the pre-outs the cleaner the signal is when it gets to the amp resulting in a better quality sound. Thats why you see high end head units with a high preout voltage, generally a max of 8v.

Pretty much got the idea of it.
2v will do for most daily setups though, but if you've found one with 4v that does everything else you want it to, then by all means get it! |

As said above the higher the voltage the better.

In theory, the higher voltage is better at rejecting noise (interference). But I've installed head units rated at having 2v, 4v, 5v, 8v RCA outputs and none have had interference.
