i have 2 pioneer 7.5" inch 3 way speakers and im planning on putting them on my parcel shelf in my EL. i know its illegal to cut into the metal of the car so i need to raise the speakers, high enough so that the magnet just fits into the exisiting holes. problem is that the rear centre seat belt is in the way. i was thinking of building a whole new parcel shelf out of mdf intergrating the slot for the seat belt as well as the speaker into the one spacer......but is it illegal for me to modify that area where the seat belt goes through the parcel shelf? its not going to change where the seat belt sits.

im not quite exactly sure your planning to do.....whats illegal is an modification to the actual metal shelf that is part of the cars structure. If it will effect the strentgth etc then its a no no but really whos gonna see and the mods you do if you cover this whole thing no one can see what youve done anyways....so id say make your mdf shelf and screw/bracket it down to the existing shelf (depending on how u do this is would actually strengthen the shelf) and go for gold...a pic with some drawings or something of what u plan to do might exlplain better.

llooks good mate hey why not i reckon its a good idea...and as weve said an extra layer mounted to the shelf i sure is completely allowed so long as it isnt weakinging the overall strength of the shelf which im sure it wont.

Not a bad drawing either good work :P

I had same issue when installing my 4 way 6x9's. Best thing i ever did was buy some plastic spacers from stupidcheep and use your soldering iron to melt the plastic to the shape of the seatbelt hump. works like magic!

EDIT: make sure you get the plastic off the soldering iron pretty quick - it stinks something shocking when it burns on there!!

i just bought a set of 6*9's and was planning this same idea. i have a gas tank to dodge aswell yay.

keep up the good work, i eagerly await to see how it turns out, as the supercheap spacers i bought (untill i get shelf done) are already annoying me.

good luck.

p.s. post many pics/ deatails plz
