Howdy fella, will be going to be finally getting a sound system in the lane and also in the suby. Just need some advice and help on what to get, as i have no idea whats what in stereos.

The missus went out today for a bit of a browse, and came back with a few prices. so i put up what we already have and what we will be needing/having.

Lane

Head deck: JVC- KD-BT1 (Not sure on this deck yet, was just what they suggested)
Pretty much what i want in a deck is to be able to play MP3's, Ipod capable, bluetooth, USB port, A good display on the deck, one that shows all relevant information on screen, and obviously a good reliable deck :P

Speakers: Splits: Alpine SPR-17S
Rears: I have no idea, prob the quivelent for the rears in the alpine.

Subs: At the moment i have some subs, but they have been sitting around for about 4-5 years, so not sure how they have held up. They are 2x 12" clarion 500 watt dual voice cone SRW-3081
But i would say more than likely these will be stuffed, and are prob very outdated.

Amp/s: Will need some amps to run the subs and possibly speakers.

I think that may be all?!??! i dunn, im F**k hopeless :P

So if you could give me some pointers and suggestions as to what is good and whats s**t that would be great.

Cheers

BEN

Unless you have left the subs out in the rain or are interested in SPL competition then speakers haven't changed much in the last oohh I dunno, 70yrs and they should be fine.
Mine are nearing on about 12yrs old (Orion) and still look and sound like new and my amps and headunit (Alpine) are even older, around 14yrs old....

JVC....YUK, but that is me...

Mate! When it comes to stezza's, go and see the skippy wogs :P at Newcastle pro sound (Jesmond). Top bunch of blokes and will definately look after ya :D I have been buying my audio gear off them since I could drive (f**k that was a long time ago) Back in those days they operated out of a market stall at the old pink elephant markets (more commonly known as The STORE these days after the earthquake rebuild) I seen a dogalogue earlier this week with some rediculous amp prices, think I can find it now

Yeah i went over there the other day, and the stupid pricks didnt want to help me out and would only show me kenwood stuff, so i told them to get f**k and left. They are arrogant wogs over there, and unless you related into thier family they dont wanna have a bar of ya. I hate the joint, it has happened to me a few times now there. I dont think i will ever go back.

Been doing most of my browesing at JB-HIFI now,They may not have the best products out there but at least they want to help you out.

my 2 cents.... that was a bit of a rant for this early in the morn :P

What da f**k you doing up at that ungodly hour! Don't you sleep man! :D Yeah, you're probably right about the skippy boys. I have known them for years and even looked after their shop security system when I worked for another company, so they probably treat me like one of the family :P Lucky me :D

castlegreyskull, Pyroay has a big write up in the tech section about speaker selections. I found it to be a great help.

But yeah just not sure on what brands and models are good these days.

how much are you looking to spend?

at the moment i have hertz hsk 165's and DLS ps6a splits...both are impressive particularly the hertz ones for their price ($330ish i think i payed for them? cant remember) i think they retail a bit more than that though.

head decks

pioneer:- great sound configeration but no electric aerial wire only remote power so aerial is alway up when deck is on

kenwood:- silly knobs break all the time

JVC:- look alright and easy to use but very basic mostly unless spending $600+

Sony:- I just hate sony's but for a cheap as chips deck have many good features

Alpine:- the ONLY brand i have had (and have had all the above) that has lasted more than 2 years. Currently 4years and counting with not a problem.

For cheaper speakers go JBL, we tested these next to their MTX, pioneer, kenwood, clarion, JVC and sony equivalents and they blew the others out of the water for clarity at a decent volume

mid priced speakers go alpine or polk (when their on special)

$400 Boston acoustics

Boston acoustics have won every major car audio sound off they have competed in for the last 5 years running (not 100% sure if this is still true but was last checked august last year)

SUBS

JBL or pioneer 12" for rock 8" for metal or 15" for RnB

Only mentioning these two because they are cheapish have better responce times than 80% of other brands and will go forever.

My JBL's now 3 years old and stillkicking like the day they were first put in

and god have they been abused

Always had Alpine head units and have been very happy with them. They have all teh features you would want.

Speakers and subs - always had Jaycar stuff. I have used their splits, amps and subs in two of my cars and have been very happy with them. Good price and good quality.

*sigh*

Is this what your hektic cuz'z told you?
honestly that advice is quite poor.
I wouldnt even think of looking at Kenwood, JVC, Sony or even most of Pioneers range in a mild sound quality setup.

For speakers/subs look at
Hertz ESk/HKS series / HX series subs
Focal 165A1 upwards / 33V1 sub
Infinity K65.7CS
Boston
DLS
Dynaudio
JL
MB Quart
Oz Audio Oz V 650S3
Polk db6501
Eclipse
Morel Tempo 6
DD

For amps
Eclipse
Audison SRx/LRx range
Alpine
Hertz
JL
Kicker

Headunits
Eclipse
Alpine

etc
etc..
theres heaps if you look hard enough,
just stay away from JVC, JBL, Sont, Boss, cheap Alpine/Pioneer (You'd be dissapointed with their performance vsprice)
