Hi guys
Possibly a long shot here but I will ask anyway. I have a pair of home rear surround speaker kits that I have spare. They are supposed to reside in cabinets 250mm x 136mm x 168mm. There is a small 80mm tweeter, a 100mm mid range/bass and include a small crossover. They are 8 ohm 100 or 150W. First up, can I use these in a car environment? I was thinking of putting them into the tailgate of my wagon or building small cabinets and setting them into the roof above the tailgate. I was also thinking that they may be able to be used somehow in the front. If I can't use them, just forget everything I said above

yep you sure can use them home rear surround speakers i use to run some in the nomad van and sounded great to i got my new sound system for the van

Definitely sounds like a plan then. WOuld it be recommended to set them up somehow in the front or go with my idea of usng them in the rear? Cheers RD

Only issue I can think of is that they have an impedance of 8 Ohms, where normal car speakers present an impedance of only 4 Ohms.
This will definitely drop the current in the circuit, and therefore the power delivered to the speakers, as normal car amps including those built into head units ask for an impedance of 4 ohms. Apart from the power issue, i doubt these will cause any problems for the amp as it will be running at below its rated perfromance. Hope that hel[s

It's always better to have your speakers in the front.
Having said that I don't think it will be possible to mount those boxes up front - they will get in the way. As far as 8ohm vs 4ohm. Your stereo will be 3dB quieter - which is barely/not an audible difference.

If I can work out how to mount it all I would probably get it up front somehow.... Cheers RD

They should work fine in a car and you will get a bit more than half the power from the amp over what it would produce into a 4 ohm load but often home speakers are somewhat more efficient than their car counterparts so on that basis it may very well be louder then a 4 ohm system and yet use less power and your amp will run cooler at the same time....

Thanks outlaw, I hope to get these installed somehow during my long haul build. There won't be too many amps invloved other than a head unit so hopefully things will still turn out OK.

-3dB is HALF the power. If you can't hear that difference, you should seek help. You should (and I can) hear 1dB differences. As for the OP, yes home audio speakers have been used in cars before, often with success. But you need to keep in mind (especially as some home gear, runs weird impedances - 6ohm is common too) you'll need more power to run it.

The home stereo 4ohm sub woofer I had in the cargo area shat itself within a couple of weeks of being connected to the amp. Think that it may have had a case of over boosting -- Those home stereo type ones aren't really up to shaking the car for very long...!...!...!... Ho hum.

Yeah - For some reason this thread came up in the "most visited" list at the home page! And hey, it is only seven months... That's not anywhere near a record!
And it gives RD the chance to tell us how his home stereo went after all... It's a sad indictment of the internet society when all these ideas get thrown out and the stories are never complete. You get the beginning, the middle, but the end is left up to the imagination. |
