I connected up my new pioneer 460 watt 6x9's yesterday and they seemed quiet with not much bass. they are rated at 80 watts rms and the amp is a 600 watt with 60 rms per channell. if i turn up the gain onto full on the amp, will the speakers work better or should i get rid of the speakers. maybe i have wired them wrong.

Firstly don't turn up the gains, make sure that the speakers are wired correctly ie + on the amp to + on the speakers etc, second make sure that the speakers are mounted solidly and no air gaps betweent the front and rear of the speakers.
See how this goes...

If one speaker has been wired back to front, then most of your bass will be missing because they'll cancel each other out.

Also make sure there isn't a "high-pass" filter set on the amp. This removes the bass from the output.

The gain shouldn't be used like a volume control. It's used to match the amp to the headunit so that when you turn your headunit up to maximum, your speakers are working at their maximum distortion-free volume. ie. not too quiet, and not too loud/distorted/damaging.

i only connected one speaker and still had the other factory speaker in at the time and also the 6x9 was just sitting in the boot so i will mount both on the parcel shelf and then connect them up. i wasnt sure with the factory wiring though which colour was the positive and which was the negative. i will have another go when i get time and see how i go.

Dont use the factory wiring with 460W speakers, they will have no way near the capacity to run them and will burn the wire very quick.

oh ok then. what do you suggest i do? run some wires strait from the amp to the speakers instead of going through the factory wire? at the moment it is going from the amp to the factory wires behind the head unit and then through the factorys up to the speakers

run in hey... what does that involve? im guessing you just use them at varying volumes and stuff for a while like running in an engine maybe?

From what you just said, the problem is just that the speaker wasn't mounted. If the air from the front and back of the speaker can mix then you will not get good sound. The sound waves will cancel out at some frequencies.

As far as the wiring thickness - I don't think you'll have a problem.
Have a look at the thickness of the wire in the back of the speaker that goes from the terminal through to the pole. Thin as.
Thicker would be better but it may not make enough difference to even be noticeable.

Exactly like I said before about the front being sealed from the back.....
