I'm in the progress of slowly building up the system in my car.
Nothing extravagent, just a bit of volume, mostly focussed on SQ.
ATM I have pioneer 6" 3-ways in the rear, and a pair of pioneer TS-C160r splits up front, both driven by a pioneer 4 channel amp.
Next on the list is an upgraded headunit (looking at Pioneer DEH-P1Y or a Kenwood whose model name eludes me...), and either a monoblock amp, or just a 2 channel bridged, driving some form of sub.
The question is....
Size of sub/sub's?
and brand of sub?
I've leant towards Pioneer with the rest of the system, although I by no means have to stick with them.
Like I said, I'm not after huge amounts of volume, just tight and punchy bass.
Would I be better with either a single or 2 10"'s? Or go for a single 12"?
Keeping in mind too, a gas tank is consuming most of the boot space.
Any advice?

if your chasing nice SQ and arent after huge volume then a nice SQ 12" or 2 10s will still give good sq without huge bass or volume....depending on how its tuned and setup anyhow....

the 2x 10"s would probably be a better option for you...Im not that familiar with the pioneer gear but ive listened to a few brands and the rockford fosgate 10" punch woofers are fantastic...great sound for the money...if u have more money the power series range

i'll second that, iv got 2 12" punch p2's but they were real 'boomy' not very tight but iv lent one to a mate and in his car it sounds really nice.. better than in mine :x its really tight and goes pretty hard too. would reccoment one of these. he's running about 300rms to it (theyre rated at 200rms) and it goes real well. also iv herd 2 10's in another car of the same sub and that was pretty nice too, although i perfered the 1 12" ask they guys at the audio shop if they can find someone with it already in their car n get a listen, when i was buying my system they managed to get a few ppl in so i could listen to it in their car n see what i was actually getting.

Rockford fosgate is a rip for cheap subs.

Looking at your setup, I'd be going for a JL W3 Dual voice coil sub powered by a small mono block. This will more than do it for you.

Cheaper options include Directed Audio Dual Voice Coil Subs.

A good 12" will keep up with many 10".

Currently I'm running 2x pioneer 305Cs, when properly amplified they sound pretty tight as they are in a sealed, tuned box. They will definately do for now.

Whatever you do, match your amp to your sub(s). No point going over the top for one and then being stingy on the other.

Around the $1000 mark, amp and sub.
Hopefully less, but willing to go a bit more for something I'll be happy with.
I haven't been 'shopping' yet to have a look at whats around, wanted to get some advice from impartial outsiders first, save me being ripped by an overly ambitious salesperson.
In your opinion is that budget enough for what I'm looking for?
Another question too, will the gas tank affect the way sound transfers to the cabin?
Thanks for the help guys.

I say go with a good quality single 12â€￾. You will get the same volume out of a really nice 12â€￾ as you will form 2 x 10’s and you can always add a second 12â€￾ later down the track if you wish,.

If you get the 2 cheaper 10’s then your only options is to add more 10’s, and 4 x 10’s requires a large enclosure + would require an amplifier able to drive a 1ohm load (or 4ohm's but you wont get enough power from most amps @ 4ohm to drive 4 x subs),

JL, Rockford and Alpine Type R would all be on the list to consider. I also like the Earthquake gear, good frequency response and handles heaps of power and is very good value.

Personally if it was me I’d be looking closley @ JL (maybe W3) and Image Dynamics IDQ12â€￾.

Second hand you can get a 1000rms monoblock for $800 - $1,000 and an IDMAX 12 (1000rms sub) for $500 and that would be a very nice system indeed although $300ish out of your budget.

Cheers Aaron, anything that you think is suitable would probably meet my standards!
I'll see if I can get one auditioned, and shop around for a S/H mono.
Lucky I'm doing some OT this week :D
Thanks for the advice guys.

Jared.

Not sure of anywhere that stocks the IDQ or IDMAX i know Stylin sells them but they may have to get one in for you. Alternatively you can hear my IDMAX in action, i'm happy to demo for you.

Type R's are sold and stocked at a number of places i know Freeway in Dandenong has them in boxes on the floor ready to go.

JL can be purchased from a number of places (including JB hi-fi).

I would check out JB Hi-Fi in Brighton. Bruce Emblin works there and is one of the most knowledgable people in Car Audio in the Country....

Ohh what wasted talent....
