Hopefully someone can help me out here, im not sure if it has been done...
i have purchased a new alpine monitor/head unit and it has a plug in the back for a reverse camera...

now seeing as my friends and i like our car games on playstation & V8 Supercars on TV, i came up with a simple idea if possible

is it possible to mount the camera at the front of the car, not permanetly so i can take it off when i want, so that when im driving i can change the input channel and be able to watch everything on the screen like a front camera on a V8 Supercar?

Mate,

Speak to a shop which stocks Eclipse brand audio. Not too sure which would be the closest one located to your "cardboard Box". LOL

There is a "Front Eye Camera" available which does exactly what you want, and can legally be placed there.

yeh its possible...just cause its a reverse camera doesnt make it any diff from any other video/cam corder..... the units tho can be quite large like as big as a coke can so ideally not something ya want hangin off the front...would work tho....helm cam would be just as good...the reverse cam would fit nice tho inside the car up on the centre of the dash right against the glass to give that nice frontward bonnet perspective view

dude i had this idea aswell!
i just mounted a reverse cam in my rear bodykit so it wouldnt go anywhere was viewable on my screen and had it recording thru my DVDrecorder in the back when i went on a e-series cruiz  ...i was goin to do a front one aswell but u need a recorder with two inputs that will switch between them like a securiety camera control unit thingo!
check out my cardomain for a pic of the rear one...for the front i was just goin to get an L brack and cut the hole out to fit the camera and mount it in the front bodykit  also had intentions of mounting one facing forward on the electric mirror so its adjustable  anywayz enough of this talk...its possible dude 8-)

Well i wasnt exactly thinking of using an actual reverse camera, but anything small that isnt hard to hide, i was even thinking of the gap next to the ford badge on the front of an EL XR, but i have silver mesh along there :?

I dont really want to be cutting any holes or anything anywhere.
I want something i can mount when i want and unplug when i dont want it there so theres less chance of a rock flying up and kissing the camera.

But my cardboard box  is near east keilor, so i think theres 2 places not far that stock eclipse, so ill look into that.

i dont really want to mount it on the dash coz i wouldnt want any relections or anything off the window (like accidently in Raiders of the Lost Arc where the cobra's reflection on the window between Harrison Ford and the snake)

hmmmm... not a bad idea havin an interior cam on the ceiling facing the back seat :P

anyone have any idea what sort of price these cameras are?

Theres a guy in the newcastle FPV club that has an AU XR8 with a supercar front, the camera is mounted in the grille (i was apparently one of only a small couple that have actually noticed it), he has it set-up to a recorder, so when he goes on cruises and stuff he can film it and overtake and get some cool angles etc. I'll try to get a video from his nephew (who i happen to work with now).

Yeah all sounds good

i went to the Hel-Cam website and sounds like they have some really good stuff.
Pitty its $399 for the basic unit with all the extras
I might let it go for a while, but i think i will go with them seeing as they specialise in that field and have a good name
