this actually gives suprisingly good performance, granted not as good as a guard mounted aerial but much better then a handheld, (even a 5w handheld), i had this in my old car and it was the best compramise between never having to buy batteries for a handheld again and not ruining the look of the car by having an aerial hanging off the guard making it look all ugly.

There are a number of channels which are Digital now in NSW. Digital scanners are still around the $1000 mark, but a great investment. To this day I havent heard ANY NSW Police using any form of encrypted communication.

The big concern with going encrypted, besides the huge capital outlay required to update and program all the radios is that if a single radio gets lost or stolen, the encryption key is known which means all the time and money invested has been totally wasted until the encryption key is changed again (which takes more time and money). Its surprising how many police lose their radios, so dont be expecting to see General Duties/Hwy cops going Encrypted any time soon... however it may be viable for Covert Ops, D's etc.

Ben_Daui: You may be interested to know that Channel J2 is digital. This includes Blacktown, Quakers and the Druitt. Bummer for u! :P Channel J (St Marys, Penrith, Mountains, Hawkesbury) is still analog, but they will be shifting soon.. there has been quite alot of digital testing going on.

The other channels which have been running alot of Digital testing are Charlie and Delta/Delta5 (Which are now seperate channels!).
