By keeping the same track as the EL (which they did), but pushing the hub face further out will increase the side to side distance between the end pivot points of suspension. Soley to aid handling and stability.

By putting a wheel and its pivot point as far away from each other wheel as possbile increases the stability of the vehicle. ie one of the reasons the VE is such a good handler. It keeps much more of the weight of the car within the wheelbase, rather than hanging "over the sides".

And it would allow Ford to use lighter rims. A/B offset rims weigh nothing compared to factory E series rims.
