From there,

Hand or Machine correct the paint - removing as many swirls, scratches, acid rain defects and marring as possible
By hand you will be limited to 50 to 60% at best
By Machine, 100% is definately possible but that takes talent, time and a rotary or powerful DA

Products I suggest for that

Gtechniq P1 - 600 to 900rpm or 2500 to 8,000 OPM
Menzerna PO85RD final finish
Menzerna SIP or 203S power finish

Once corrected, it's time to glaze the paint to enhance it
Prima Amigo, Blackfire Gloss Enhancing polish or Poorboys Black Hole are the best available glazes
or

Glare Micro Finish and Professional Polish to enhance flake, colour, depth of gloss and give it that glassy wet sharp look.
Final step is either

Driven to Perfection Marine Sealant
Glare Professional Polish

Sorry for the quoting the images but they relate to my question.....

I seemed to have missed what you used to get this EF bonnet looking like it did. My wifes EF has this exact problem on the bonnet and boot (maybe a little worse) and I have been trying to figure out what to use. I bought some Mothers California Gold Car Wash and Carnauba Cleaner Wax (paste form) to try. I applied a little of the wax this afternoon by hand and it did actually restore the paint to blue but it still has "hazing" in it meaning it wasn't a deep shine like below. Now that I have seen both here and first hand that it *could* be recovered, I am all ears as to what I *should* be using instead.

Cheers
RD

GLARE Zero is the product of choice for that, it melts out the oxidation , reversing it and deep cleaning the paint

yeah thats what it costs, however I'll be ordering some this coming week so if you want to try it out for free, I'll send you a small container of it which would be enough to take care of your paint prep work

Matthew, that would be fantastic - thanks! I can see potential with what I did with the Mothers stuff so using better stuff should do the bonnet justice....

Cheers

here are my recommendations
Makita BO6030 orbital - $300 to 390 - extremely reliable, no vibration and very easy to handle (one hand is all thats needed
3mm orbit throw means its not as good at removing defects in paint but I dont use it for that anyway
it's obviously very good at sanding stuff as well. comes with the dust sucker and dust bag to store it in while your working.
pads - it fits 6 to 8 inch pads

Festool Rotex or 150EQ - quite expensive but worth it
6 inch to 8 inch pads
(6.5 inch or 7 inch pads are best)
expensive but one of the best.

FLEX 3401 VRG DA - 8mm orbit throw and the best DA on the market
However the price is nasty at $846.00 due to the aussie distributors crazy price hiking recently.

ROTARIES - Makita 9227 - this is what I use
$350 to 420
many backing plates available to fit it

Metabo PE-12-175 - $439 approx
this is a light weight machine that has better gearing and circuitry but can overheat when used for long periods and will shutdown when the brushes wear out so more servicing may be needed

Don't bother with the Meguiars G220, it's a real dissappointment to me.

all the best

Don't be afraid of a rotary no matter what car care shops (online or not) and detailing enthusiast websites say, its the user and not the machine that causes buffing swirls, holograms, RIDS and micro scratches in paint

A tool is only as good as it's operator
Speaking of which, it's back to the grindstone for me right now. 6 more hours of finessing to do with the machine
