HI fellow modders,

i have just purchased a FG XR6 Ute tub and am on the path to turning it into a trailer. My question is

Can i go down to my local wrecker and "cut" out the rear of a ute sub frame and weld up the rest to use it as the tub frame.?

OR

Do i have to get a frame made just from steel, would be relatively easy as all mounting points are inline.

ANY thoughts, experience or suggestions would be great.

Suggest it would be easier all round, to build a frame out of RHS, as using the rear of a ute still requires the manufacture and fitting of a draw bar, and fitting an axle to carry the wheels.

Cant see why you couldn't cut the rails of a ute right behind the cab where the tub ends to make a trailer out of.

All the tub to trailers i have seen are on a simple ladder frame.

Not 100% sure but i think you have to get the trailer registered as it is too wide.

kwaussiekid,

i'll be doing what you said. I've found a palce that do ANY type of trailer in geelong, bit of a far way to travel but considering he does the frame, axle, leaf springs, mount points, mounts the tub, checker plate on the front, draw bar, tow point etc for $750

MMD,

Yeah you're right most tub to trailer frames are a simple ladder type. I do also have to register the trailer as well.

Well spotted Andrew. Geelong is only an hour or so down the highway. You should be happy with the end result, and I look forward to seeing it sometime.

If it's going to be bigger than 6x4 (which it will be, based on a FG ute tub) it will have to be registered in Vic, which isn't very expensive. It will also need a compliance tag, and if that joint is doing the frame, axel, draw bar & so on for $750, that's pretty good. What sort of weight do they rate the springs at? Do they fit a braked axel & over-ride brakes?

I've got a mighty boy ute tub that I plan on making into a trailer, but it's smaller than 6x4 so I don't have to register it lol.

Cheers

ToranaGuy

toranaguy,

The whole trailer will be based upon a 7 X 5 frame, which as you siad i will have to register. They'll do registration but will cost an extra $120 a year which is pretty good in my book.

Weight of the springs is 1800kg GTM (Whatever GTM means?), which can be bumped up to 2400kg GTM with elcetric brakes.

The lil' suze mighty boy tub ay, would look alright as a trailer, 24's, paint job, neons and ya set

Wow, that's a big carrying load. I take it hydraulic over-ride brakes for the 1800kg? Why so expensive to register, commercial rego? My 12x6 tandem is under $40 a year personal rego.

The mighty boy tub trailer has been done once before, wouldn't be able to fit 24's under it without serious mods. I'm debating on painting it to match my ute, or do I do something wild & different to catch more attention? Neon's, hrmmmm, maybe.

It would be great if I could find a pair of 15's to match what I've got on the mighty boy already, otherwise I'll have to roll it on either the retro 12's I have or some 15 inch hyundai steelies lol.

Cheers

Nah,

its definitely not commercial. As for the rego, thats how much they charge at westcoast trailers to do it drive in drive out so to speak. It also includes the compliance plate. Is that expensive??

As for wheels, at the moment just the FG steely stokies 16", then some rims to match maybe later on.

ALrighty,

Trailer is all made up. I debadged it, changed the Ford badge on the tailgate to an FPV one, fitted a ute silver stripe kit, fitted up the tonneau cover and it came up a treat :D The wheels that are going on are BF XR 18's.

What da ya think?

Looks fantastic Andrew; I take it you are pleased with the outcome. How does it feel, being towed?

Yeah i am. They guys did a great job and its very secure. It feels fine being towed, like there is nothing behind the car..however it creates a few looks as it passes by. It'll be re-sprayed soon to match the colour of the car.

heres some piccies of it hooked up.
