There are alot of theories as to why it occurs, but basically it is because the lens on the EF/EL are made out of polycarbonate and not glass...

Well it was designed to try and stop chips and cracks from rocks, and to be honest, I've not seen any EA-ED with chipped headlights, so... But you wouldn't be able to see the rocks if it was night, anyway. |
