I am looking to LED a spare set of tail lights that I have.
What brightness LED's should I be using. I have seen a set of LED's on ebay that are 140,000 mcd. Would that be too bright? If I get these 10mm LEDs, I would be using about 20 each side, having 5 wired up as tail lamps, and all 20 coming up when I hit the brakes. They would be behind standard EF Tail lights. Has anyone seen where Dual-brightness LEDs are available individually (ie not in a trick tail light)?

Hmmm
Apart from the obvious "Ricer Tool Boy" comments, couldn't you just feed the positive leg of the LED two different voltages? Thinking about it you might need three different voltages. A Low one for Tail light only A second Low one for when the tail lights are on, and you add additional voltage when braking A High one for when you are braking when the tail lights are off. Of course, I could be WAYYYY of base, but I don't see why that would not work. BenJ

Ideally you'd want to bays of lights per enclosure.
One would need low mcd for 'tail light' application One with high mcd for 'brake' application. If done right it will look awesome. I suggest you fit a diode also! |

Didn't data_mine do something like that for his el years ago....
you would need 3 circuits as benj said.
