mine are mounted in the gap when the boot is shut uhf drivers side and phone passanger side
my old man has the same on a ef fairmont ghia my brother has his opposite the radio aerial

You can also mount them using a bracket which attaches to the front guard between the bonnet and the guard.
Have a look at the red fairmont in my gallery - you'll see a UHF antenna mounted on the right.

Yeah you need a "Z" bracket, about $8 from 4wd store, mounts in the boot/bonnet channel and comes out through the gap. I had a thick, black fiberglass one about 60cm tall and it gave really clear signal and looked really good. Unless you have a bullbar or nudge bar that is the way to go.

i have mine mounted at the back of my front roght gaurd with a Z bracket and also cut out the section under my stereo to put my uhf in the dash and looks alot more tidy now will try and get some fotos for ya
