Earlier E series ambient air sensors will work with the EF/EL CC systems as well.

Yep, do look the same, except the mounting bracket is different. Earlier models have them sitting in front of the lower radiator - in front of the A/C condensor.

mine had died so went down to the wreckers today and got one of a older model

No probs - EF/EL ones are in the lower bumper air dam, so at wreckers quite often you'll find that if the bumper has been pulled, the sensor will disappear with it, or it may get binned.
