G'day I was just wondering if anybody happens to know if the au airbags would run in an ef/el, Like I understand they bolt up and all, but would they necessarily operate correctly etc.
thanks in advance.

Hey there,
I'll be looking at this over the weekend. I was waiting for my EF to run out of rego, that way I had a running car that I could experiment with.

From what I have read, the plug for the airbag is different, an the horn wiring is different.

The horn will be a quick solder and heatshrink job, but the wiring for the airbag cannot be soldered, as the airbag circuit works off certain levels of resistance. If this is the case, altering the wiring in any way could potentially generate faults, and may even cause the air bag(s) to deploy.

Ok, I have an update.

It is a touch harder then I first thought. I have picked up the AU airbag tonight, and the air bag plug is totally smaller. The AU plug is a LOT smaller. I was thinking that I would have gotten away with obtaining an AU plug, and pushing my EL pins into the plastic lart on the AU plug. The size of the pins is different as well as the plug.

I will be looking at what wiring modifications are needed in order to fit an AU clock spring. The only issue with that is that I would need to be also running AU cruise buttons, and the blinker stalk (The on/off for the AU cruise is achieved by twisting the tip of the blinker stalk).
I will be investigating the wiring diagrams, just to see if the wiring that goes up the steering column to the clock spring is different.

Hope this helps

What's the point of all the stuffing around when EF/EL airbags are so readily available and cheap?

total tool, cheers mate, much appreciated, but now thinking about it maybe we can still cut and shut the wiring after all there won't be a lot of change in resistance.

Mainly because black au airbags are readily available, and also cheap, black ef airbags, are rare as hens teeth, and when found generally going for top dollar.

Just thinking about a possible future build using mostly black etc, and i'm sure it'd be handy for people with xr's etc. to know.

Get your EF airbag and VHT it mate!

Plus AU airbags aren't exactly black, they're more of a charcoal dark grey and there is a colour difference against a black wheel.
